three most significant moments in the last 100 years?...

even if most of you guys were very young or just plain did not lived some events... what do you qualify as the most siginificant moments in history on the last 100 years?

    I would say:

    1. 9/11 (almost sent us to a recesion, great loss of life, changes in our way of life and how we look at life)
    2. Berlin wall demolition (end of communism)
    3. USA entering WWII (we could or at least all of europe could be talking german and listening to wagner now)

I agree, but it probably will be the most significant in the upcoming 100, depending on either a positive or negative outcome from the war on terror.

Re: three most significant moments in the last 100 years?...

Well 9/11 is easy because we are talking about significant moments. While Hitler's rise to power and the fall of the Soviet Union are significant, they aren't exactly moments. 9/11 is a moment. And I don't know how you can say that 9/11 isn't even close to the most significant event of the past 100 years when we refer to time as pre-9/11 and post-9/11. I think it is significant too because all of the impacts that it has had on the world are still yet to be seen or determined.

Sure the impact was felt most in the US but that is not to say that it did not have a huge impact on the rest of the world. When an event has such an enormous impact on the world's most influential country, it cannot help but to affect the entire world.

I would like to add the Cuban Missile Crisis to the list.

I'll only claim these as "U.S." moments. In no special order...

    9/11
    Pearl Harbor
    Crash of 1929

i certainly don't think in terms of pre-9/11 and post-9/11 (except when i'm in the airport) i think that's mostly a US-based thing.

I don't know about for the rest of the world, but anyone who doesn't think 9/11 is one of the most significant moments in U.S. history is crazy. I only checked this thread out to see what OTHER moments people suggested.

I think the pre/post 9/11 thing is more of a news media thing. My immediate surroundings have not changed one bit since then, just the idiot box's message. As a political tool to keep the people in check.

Re: three most significant moments in the last 100 years?...

    1. Far and away, the advent of the Internet.
Not so much the creation of, as it wasn't doing a whole hell of a lot that was very surprising back when it was still in the fledgling DARPAnet stages, when it was really little more than a handy novelty. I'm talking about the actual publicizing and subsequent commercialization of the 'Internet', in the early 1990's.
Once this bad boy was put into the hands of the populace, the entire world changed...and for that matter, it still is.

    2. Beatlemania. I'm not kidding.
I couldn't give less of a shit about them myself, but those four goofy-looking, erratically behaving Brits did more for establishing cross-cultural, International recognition and respect than 10 years' worth of political summits and 10 trillion dollars' worth of free trade agreements would have. To say nothing of what they did to the music industry.
I'd be hard pressed to list 5 of even the most distantly relevant artists in the last 40 years who wouldn't cite the Beatles as major influences on their careers - careers which were then, in turn, major influences on almost everyone alive today. Every life has a soundtrack.

    3. My birthday.
    Ha! :happycow:

    ...What?
Oh, come on. I'm surprised nobody else beat me to the punch!

Fine, fine. The fall of the Berlin Wall. Boo, communism; hooray, unity.
    There. Happy?
