Re: formating my hardrive?....
Reformat is a "delete everything start again" option - so you will lose windows XP and ALL THE DATA on your hard drive (thingy that saves your files).
There are many things you can do.
a) If you have the windows CD you can do a system Repair - just put in your windows CD into your computer, reboot, hit enter or something when prompted - follow the prompts until you see the option "R to repair windows"
b) System restore
Personally I prefer a format over all of these - I just burn my important files onto a DVD and then format. Its gives me a fresh start and another 2/3 months before I have to format again.

Re: formating my hardrive?....
Product recovery cd-rom will most probably be windows + extra stuff you get for free - so if you had office when you bought your computer then you will have office after you run the product recovery cd (well that would be it).
So yea all the programs etc. that were originally on your computer will hopefully be reinstalled with that cd
But as always - back up your important files.
