Audio - How do I convert a .dat file to .mp3??

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
I've already searched with no luck, and I've tried downloading about 3 or 4 programs to do this.

THe .dat file is a song that is played in a game I have. I have a total of 12 .dat files. I would like to convert those .dat files to .mp3. Anyone have the program or resource to do so?

Here's the file. Test out whatever you have. If you can figure it out, lemme get the program from you or I can give you the others to convert. This file is only audio.

Ok, you will be very excited about my answer...
I'm pretty sure, you won't get one little sound out of one of your .dat-files.

(.dat stands for DATA. Data is everything. Data can be also savegames.
Simply everything!
The individual software gives the interface for using such dat-files and knows what to do with them and how to exctract information.
That your game is using .dat for soundfiles could mean they don't want to see this files used by anybody for anything. Maybe there are programming reasons, but I'm not a programmer !)

Anyhow, you cannot convert a .dat-file! How? How should a converter know what to convert, because it's not a regular soundfile.
I tried simply to add .mp3 to your file, just to proof it and nothing changed.
Because its .dat! :happycow:

Basicly, that means for you .....

But did you try do search for soundfiles somewhere in the game's folder?
Or maybe there is one out there who knows better..

Re: Audio - How do I convert a .dat file to .mp3??

there's a program out there that records the audio stream that is sent to your speakers... basically, what you would do is go into the game, and play the file from within the game while the sound recording program runs... then you can open the sound file as a .wav or anything and convert it to an mp3

don't remember the name of the recording program though... little help... anyone?

DAT files are the MPEG video files on VideoCD. They aren't always DATA files. I can find PLENTY of programs to convert a .dat into a readable video file, but, that won't work for this audio file.

Trust me, I'm one step below a programmer. These files are strickly for audio, and they are called by there file name. Somehow the came decodes them into a song. Here's a screenshot of the music folder.

THought about that, but, I would also get the other sound effects. And no.. there is no way to disable the sound effects and only listen to the media.

Re: Audio - How do I convert a .dat file to .mp3??

yap yap, you were right. I slept on my face during I posted to your question. I apologize.

I tried to convert your .dat with a few audio converters. The most told me like

"The following file does not contain recognizeable audio."

(That message came out of the "River Past audio Converter".

Think that a problem with your .dat files will be, that the most Audio Converters can just
convert vcd_mpg1-dat files.

But your file is not matching that criteria. (I think your file is not matching ANY criteria :happycow: )
I thought in beginning that your .dat would be vcd-mpg1 and tried to convert with
"Virtualdub".
By that, I wanted to convert it to PCM-WMA.
But he told me also its not recognizeable.

I think the main problem for you is, that no converter-software or any other stuff can convert
that dats, because it cannot extract any necessary information like "codec" or something to verify the file as possible to convert.

Is that your problem, or are you already a step further?

Re: Audio - How do I convert a .dat file to .mp3??

.DAT files are NOT just MPEG1 VideoCD files.
.DAT files are nothing more than DATA files which can be text, video, audio, images or anything else and usually encrypted or formatted in a proprietary way.

I'm going to assume from the limited screenshot, plus since you've choosen to completely ignore my question, that the game in question is called Mojo Master by AXE Games.
While I don't have answer for you yet as to how to convert them you should know that I found out that while it's made by AXE Unlimited Games it's piggy backed ontop of WildTangent which is also spy/adware. And if you remove the WT part of it, you can't play the game any more.

BINGO! Your in the same boat or, better said, you've recognized the problem just as I have found it to be. I just need to find a way to figure out the coding to it. Obviously the file is being decrypted somehow to play the song, I just need to find out how, and a way or program to duplicate that method.

I know WildTangent is "considered" SpyWare, however with the way I have my machine configured, I have complete control on everything. Once I installed the program, I only allow certain things to access the internet and the part of WildTangent that IS SpyWare, I deny permanently.

Point is.. I want this music.

Well, I attached a sample file in my first post. Try it, and tell me if it works. If it does, report back.

Re: Audio - How do I convert a .dat file to .mp3??

Hijacker this occured to me.

When storing textures etc. one strips header and I believe palette information and only leaves the raw data within the file - this greatly reduces its size.

Would be possible that that .dat file is only the raw data needed to play the sound wave? So all that is possibly needed is teh addition of the right header information and teh file will play?

I'm assuming it would be that easy. Unfortunately, thats at a level I can't do myself.
