Random freezes?
I need some help,I'm getting random freezes and I'll have to hard shutdown my computer and i can't seem to fix it. It doesn't happen to often, it seems to happen most when I'm playing Guild Wars. The mouse freezes sound stops and I get no responce from things such as ctrl + alt + del. all of the fans in my computer stay on ( I have 5 case fans, a fan on my graphics card, and two 80mm fans on my power supply, along with my cpu heatsink fan) aswell as the lights in all of my glowing fans. My powersupply is more than eneough (520wats), and I have tested my ram. I had my processor replaced a while ago so I think thats ok, but I guess I don't really know. I also got a new mobo a while ago so I'm pretty sure thats ok too. I think my next move is to test my sound card. ( just by taking it out and fuckin' around on my computer for a while). But I'm really thinking its probebly my graphics card with an overheating problem or something. If you guys have any ideas i would really apprechate the help. Just incase you need them here are my specs...
Intel 2.8ghz
1gig geil ram with heatsinks
160gb ide harddrive (260gb external hd)
xfx Gforce fx 5500 - might have been a refurb when i bought it, cant remember
skyhawk 520 watt power supply
asus p4s800 e - delux
soundblaster audigy 2 zs
thanks for any help

Re: Random freezes?
I've been having the same problem too the past few days. It would completely lock up seeminlgly when the computer has to "think" more than usual. Also, it almost always freezes up when I'm playing World of Warcraft.
Also, just last night I noticed a strange noise in the computer. It is a repeated "click" followed by a "spin up" every 2 seconds or so. This only happens while playing WoW during heavy PvP fights, seemingly when the video card has to do more work. Right when the computer clicks, it slows down heavily, then you hear what sounds like a fan or hard drive spinning up, and about a second later the computer is back to normal... until it clicks again right away.
I know alot about computers and am pretty stumped here. I think it's either my video card or my power supply. I just got a new 80gb hdd so I can't be sure if it's getting enough power.
My comp specs:
Intel 2.4ghz
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
160gb hd space
Creative Soundblaster Sound Card
CD drives, etc...... normal stuff!

Re: Random freezes?
sound like u have a over-heating problem. try to get some more fans in ur case if u can and make sure u have enough thermal paste in between the CPU and heatsink/fan. if that doesnt work then it might be outdated 4-in-1 mobo drives. if u upgrade that and its still get random reboots then one of ur power-rails inside the PSU has shortend out. the best way to fix this is to buy a new PSU. hope this helps!

Re: Random freezes?
Mmmhh...think schottdb could be right.
The video card might be the reason. But I would more guess the actual driver is not fitting the game right.
Are you doing updates of your video card's driver? If yes, delete your actual driver and install the one who originally came with your card.
In most cases now you would have also to install the game again.
Maybe you wont have to. These are all variables you should consider b4 doing anything greater. Its just time you need. No money.
But if the Computer is not only hanging up during one/more games it could be a lot more stuff.
Guess you have XP as system, so look in the systemoptions under the drives status page if your drives are running normal.
Also you could click with the rmb on your "workplace-icon" (Long ago that I worked with windows in english) and look into the device-manager. Maybe there somewhere you can see anything giving you clues.
Much could be the reason, really also cpu/mainboard. But like I wrote, try all of that first, could save you money.
Deinstall the graphic cards driver, then install the one you got with your vcard.
Download also the newest one, if it all fails and you still get freezers after installing, you can install then the newest back. but post after!

Re: Random freezes?
Well, I opened up my computer today to "listen" for the problem, as I said earlier it was making noise. Now, it does make that noise really only when i'm playing WoW and there is heavy CPU usage.
The noise is coming from the second hard drive that I put into the computer recently. I didnt have any problems right after putting it in, it actually didnt start freezing till about 2 weeks after. As I said the noise is a click, then a spin-up. Can a low-powered hard drive cause the computer to freeze???
Also, the new hard drive I bought is maxell 7200rpm, and is used for storage only, all my program files and windows is on my main drive..
It also freezes when not playing WoW, but not as much. When playing WoW, i can bank on it freezing up within a few minutes, if not right at startup.

Re: Random freezes?
Was it not Vicent123's problem to be discussed here? hehe... :happycow:
Well, most probably you have already tried, but did you run the computer already without your 2nd HD?
In the second row you could check the RAM, the power-fan and the mainboard.
Also look for abnormal events in your system-log. Maybe there something was recorded.
I cannot say in english where exactly the system-log is, but its in the system options-menue.
The almost always responsible parts for a frozen system are the HDs and the CPU. (CPU might be too hot, or simply damaged).
But like we all know, we all could have the absolute same problem with our systems, but 4 each of us, the solution would be a total different one! Welcome in the world of computers..hehe

Re: Random freezes?
event log is under administrative tools\eventviewer\system. Go to controll pannel and switch to classic view to see admin tools (in win xp). I put some thermal paste on my cpu

Re: Random freezes?
Fixed it, i've just been too lazy to take out my comp and disconnect the 2nd hard drive. I did it yesterday and no freezes yet. I guess Dell is just lazy and gave me a power supply JUST big enough to power what I had. Thanks for the help guys
