Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
I really don't think there will be a signficant impact to the PC market in the near future. While it will certainly have some specialized functionality that is more powerful than a PC, the PC is still a much more flexible platform from everything I have read. MS already feels secure in the PC market. What they are fighting hardest for in this release is contorl of the home media market.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
I have to agree with Mael. No matter what comes out for your tv, will never effect the pc market...at least not in a major way. I own all three consoles and still play pc games way more. and while the 360 is going to be a bit more powerful it wont take long for the pc market to catch up and surpass what will be available. And as pointed out in the previous post the flexiblity that a pc provides is untouchable...besides playing a FPS on a console absolutly blows.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
I for one use my computer for things other than games (forums, news, information, porn, and occasionaly work). The consoles are for games baby!

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
I agree with the rest that I do not believe it will have much affect on the PC. No real reason for it to.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
I have no strong desire to surf the web while watching my TV so my P.C. will always have a place for me. I havent bought a gaming consol since NES but I am planning on buying the new xbox 360.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
it is my understanding, and i could be wrong. but i believe that the new xbox will ship with the capability to browse the interweb and do many other pc type things it may be a great way for people to get a low cost power computer into their homes. i certianly dont see the next xbox really hurting the pc market any, but it will certainly set the stage for a whole new way to look at gaming consoles.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
360 will not effect PC sales much based on the fact that die hard PC enthusiasts will remain diehard PC enthusiasts and die hard console fans will remain console fans..... plus there are some things only PCs are capable of that consoles aren't (Word processing video editing etc etc)

I feel you on this.
I just recently got a PS2 slim just so I could play GT4 and NFSU2. That was the first console I bougt since SuperNES came out...
My PC is more for the web, research, forums, email, music, and other stuff. I RARELY play games on this thing. Nwo that I think about it, the only PC Game I've played inthe past 3 years is SWAT 3 or SWAT 4.
XBox 360, I won't be buying. Honestly, I have no use for it. Not really a gamer.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
I don't think it will have any more effect on the PC than the original XBox did when it came out, or any other consoles.
I've always gone with the PS, PS2, and will probably go with PS3, just because the playstation is what I started out with. It was the first console I bought after the NES. It has certain console specific games that i'd have a hard time giving up. One is the Final Fantasy line of games which are probably my favorite console games. If there starts to be more original titles coming out for the Xbox that had the effect that halo did, I may consider buying an XBox 360 also.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
with out pcs i dont think there would really be consoles. basically comuter technology is what pushes consoles to come out. Some game developer put as "computers are always getting better and consoles are just snapshots of that technology."

I heard the resident evil series may be moving to the xbox....if thats true I may consider picking one up...or beating up a little kid and stealing theirs.

Re: Xbox 360 effect on PC
Personally, I have never thought it was about the hardware (sorry, any fanboys / nerds reading this), but was always about the benefits to the consumer and the quality of the entertainment experience per $ spent.
As to benefits:
On one hand, certainly X360 has some advanced computing and networking capabilities, and we are about to see a lot more integration between PSP and PS3 (i.e. downloading video, timeshifting tv to watch on the road, music, remote control functions), so consoles are creeping into the living room (where PC never really went).
On the other hand, we are seeing MediaStation PC devices creeping about the house, with streamed multi-room music, video servers, TIVO functions, instant wifi links to handheld devices and mobile phones (just check out what FMA's Mobile Agent can do with a SONY Ericsson phone). PC just gets better and better, faster and faster.
As to content
There is no single PC market for developers and publishers to aim at, and there is no "platform owner" who provides marketing support in the same ways as SONY, Ninty and M$ XBox do. And for a publisher it is not about the maximising sales, it is more about minimising risk. So they will always pick the device with the largest secure installed base to release good content on, which leads to a vicious circle that concentrates sales onto one device very quickly. And this is not going to be PC, in the minds of publishers in US and EU.
...however, outside US and EU the massive growth in MMO games (india, china, korea) simply cannot be ignored. I have a funny feeling that PC gaming is going to come back in a bigger way with online games than many expect (especially now that M$ and Intel have announced support and budgets to promote PC gaming -which is another way they can attack SONY of course).
Summary
- consoles are simple, fit into the living room, work well and have lots of good games
- PC is more flexible, can do other things and has even more good games, but is different

Microsoft wouldn't have made the Xbox if they thought it would impact their interests elsewhere.
The comment about consoles being snapshots of the computers is oh so true...
