Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Looks like I need some new hard drives... good time to upgrade from the ata-66 that I am running right now.
Anyone mind filling me in on the latest and greatest? I would be looking at 1TB of hdd space, in a RAID 5 configuration. I'd be needing a controller as well as drives.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Well if your mobo supports RAID there's usually atleast 2 HDDs you can use there
You do understand that you don't run your OS from RAID, right?
RAID is for storage only...well backups too.
Any HDD can be used as part of a RAID.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Actually, you can run your OS from a disk array. You could even remote boot your operating system off of a SAN if you really wanted too...
If you "think" you need RAID then you'd better do some homework here:
http://www.storagereview.com/
before you start ordering parts.
You can spend a few hundred to a few hundred thousand depending on your budget and what you "think" you need.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Well considering that I already have a 160 GB striped array on my current system, I'm looking at RAID 5 for redundancy and fault tolerance.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Well, thanks for that website, btw. I scored 5 of these in the 147 GB variety:
http://www.storagereview.com/articl...88E147L0_1.html
Now to blow the 200$ for a controller for them all. I plan on running a 1+0 array with 4 of them for my primary hard drive and local storage. One of them will go to the wifes system, and I'll use my current ultra-133 ATA raid controller with some new drives in the network's server for mass redundant storage and a backup drive. Figure I can burn images and save them to the server for the Oh shits, since the server is a very stable little box and having the redundancy there as well would do very well. Figure 1TB should do me right

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Ok fine while it might be possible to run an OS from a RAID array, it's not a good idea to do so
Check out Newegg.com. You plan to run in RAID 0+1 using 4 ATA 133 drives? For around $15 you can get a PCI card that has supports:
RAID 0, 1 and 0+1
2x ATA 133

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
No offense, but that's nuts.
$400+ per HDD then $200+ per RAID controller
You using this for a business or something? Because other wise it's just nuts.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Why in gods name are you going to drop that much or for that matter why even buy a SCSI drive when you can get a serial HD with 400 GB of storage for like half that price. That is flipped, even if it is for a buisness, hell I fire you if you did that.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Show me a serial drive that has the same MBTF, access time, and mb/s as a high end SCSI drive.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
What are you using this RAID for that you need that kind of access time?

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Why do I need this? Well, I figure since I'm already in the SMP world, I might as well upgrade from rathole little hard drives that always seem to fail when I need them most, to redundancy so I don't have my valuable time used up with rebuilding a system instead of simply hotswapping out a hard drive and letting it reconstruct overnight.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
I won't disagree with the access times. What you fail to realise what we refer to as "low payoff". In other words your paying something like twice the price for speeds that can only be measured with a computer, you couldn't tell the difference. To each his own.

Re: Oh boy oh boy oh boy.
Considering the step up from what I am running now, combined with learning how to operate scsi equipment, the investment would be worthwhile.. plus ebay makes it cheaper as well.
