Re: need some opinions

I'd go with dual, given how much multitasking the average user does, and how little usage of extraneous clock cycles there is.

What's your budget?
If money is no object then an AMD 64 dual-core might be more to your liking. You get the best of both worlds, 64-bit processing and dual-CPUs in the form of a dual-core CPU

Other wise I say stick with an AMD 64. You need to have a real need to make use of a dual-CPU system and I believe also WinXP Pro so the OS can make proper use of it.

Re: need some opinions

win 2k will run a dual processor or single hyperthreaded processor. Server will run on up to 4 cpu's, or 2 hyperthreaded. Advanced server runs on more than that.

I have been running dual processors for quite some time... first system was dual 933 pentium 3's, then upped to dual xeon 2.2Ghz. I like the extra horsepower, plus the fact that you can spend less cash for dual processors than you would for the newest greatest thing... and get better performance.

XP pro is the same as win 2k pro. Just repackaged with purty graphics and some add on stuff.

I would say go duals.
