password for usb external hdd...
i just got a seagate 160gig hard drive and put it in a vantec nexstar 3 enclosure.
my question is, is there a way to lock the drive with a password so that only i can access it when it is plugged into different computers?

Re: password for usb external hdd...
yeah i was thinking the password would be handy since im living in a dorm and people turn other peoples stuff into community stuff and it would be nice to have some privacy for sensitive work related files

Re: password for usb external hdd...
password protect the files then... can't lock the hard drive completely, but there are plenty of ways to protect files
one thing my buddy does is install a linux partition and put all of his sensitive stuff there... that way, only a computer running linux can see the stuff...
kind of a lot of work, but effective when you just want to protect your pr0n collection from the average joe

Re: password for usb external hdd...
files are a different story, that you can do. But the whole hard drive would involve some kind of firmware (?) mod or something that when you plugged it in would trigger a password.

Re: password for usb external hdd...
StorageCrypt 2 http://www.magic2003.net/scrypt/
StorageCrypt allows you to encrypt and password protect removable and fixed drives, including USB drives, Memory Sticks, Flash cards , PCMCIA drives and more.
I'm not sure how long the demo last or what this limits are but it's a $30US for a single-user license.
SafeHouse http://www.pcdynamics.com/SafeHouse/
Again I have no idea what the limits of the demo are, but the price is $40US
Go a Google search for: encrypt harddrive
That's all I used and those were they first 2 that looked like they could do the trick.

LEGEND USB pens have a file called penlock on them which does what you're asking. see if you can get hold of that sofware? it might work. I lost mine so can't give it out but you might know someone who does???

Re: password for usb external hdd...
OK if the drive is on a local machine, and you are on a Domain or Workgroup you can create a share on the drive and use the entire drive, then in the permissions of the drive remove everyone including the local admin and just put your self on there. Also limit shared connections to one, that way if you are on two computers and you leave one up and go to the other somone else cant access it from you machine. Dont forget your password tho because once you remove the local admin youre fucked.

Re: password for usb external hdd...
Try a small free program called crytext. Just anstall on your pc. If there are any files on the external drive u want to encrypt, just right click on them or entire folders and zooop, they can't be read. To unencrypt, just right click on them again and zooooop u can read them again. U need to enter your own password to do both. Works like a dream and totally free and under 100kb.
