Re: win xp

what are you trying to do or share? Right click the folder or files, select properties, then select the sharing tab. From there you can make it shared, give it a name and/or hide it as well and do permissions. If you want to hide the share, put a $ at the end of it.

Yea, but even with linux, sometimes people make their own holes in the fence . . they dont need gates.

Re: win xp

Here is how you can enable file ant printer sharing for WindowsXP:

Goto Start, then Settings, then Network connections.

You should have a " Local Area Connection " connection in there.

Click on that, then right click and choose properties. If you dont have an entry called " File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks " then you need to add it. If you do, make sure you have a checkmark next to it. If you do, go ahead and close that window.

Find the directory you wish to share, and right click on it, choose properties.

Click on the Sharing tab, and then put a check next to " share this folder on the network " under " Network Sharing and Security " . Then you can do as Jack suggested with permissions and such.

Hope this helped.

The only reason why Linux doesn't have the security problems on the same scale as windows is because it's only a small fraction of the market share. If linux were as big as windows, people would find more holes and vulnerabilities in linux too.

Generally I agree with you, but I think that Windows XP is the first decent OS that MS has come out with...I actually like it, so I'll stick up for them.

Re: win xp

If you are using the ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) you may need to make adjustments. Also, if you are behind a "router" as in a cable/dsl router, you will only be able to share among you private network. Unless you change settings in your router to allow pass-through to your shared device. I wouldn't suggest that you share your "whole" computer unless you are sharing a separate partition and not the same partition as your operating system. You could be setting yourself up for a hack.

Re: win xp

Not sure exactly what it is that you want to do, but if you're wanting to share everything to let other people download your stuff, you may want to look into kazaa, or one of the other many file-sharing programs. Of course be sure that you have a good antivirus program installed and the definitions are current. You may also want to be sure that you don't have anything that violates copywrite law, like MP3's, movies, etc...

Re: win xp

Stay away from KazAA. Unless you want spyware installed. Go with KazAA-lite and be sure to turn off the file sharing (if you are sharing music/movies that shouldn't be shared) or you will run the risk of receiving a nice letter from Sony or the likes (if you're on a network that will disclose who you are).

Re: win xp

Besides the RIAA coming after you for sharing files... people leave folders such as "My Documents" shared... amazing how many passwords or credit card information you can find on the Kazaa network. And its the people's own damn fault too.
