Pentium II and double IDE hard drive issue

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
Hi there. I need some help in sorting out a issue I have installing two IDE hard drives in a pentium II Xeon 450MHz running XP with 256MB of RAM.
The drives are being installed into an old print server that used to run SCSI drives but these have been removed.
XP will install the drivers for both hard drives and populate the properties lists which come up when asked to....but it will not allow me to use or access the drive at all through an icon(one doesn't come up).
The Harddrives and CD writer are all set to Cable Select as the Compaq bios has a hissy fit when given Master and Slave settings for each of the drives. (Primary IDE HDD(boot drive) Master - CD-RW Primary Slave // Secondary IDE HDD Master) and when it finally gets past the bios XP still doesn't pick the second HDD up anyway.
Any help would be awesome.
Thanks.

Two things:

1) 20 posts in your first day? wow. wow.

2) what the hell are you doing? no... seriously.. what are you doing? I get the computer, but why are you calling it a print server? was the computer used at one time to print network documents? I think you're confusing a networked computer with a "print server." A print server is not a computer at all.

That said, have you tried setting up the CD-Rom as master on the secondary IDE channel? If it works, leave it there and add the second hard drive as a slave on the primary channel. If you have no luck, add the second hard drive as a slave to the CD-Rom drive.

In other words, try out all of the configurations.

It's odd that your board likes "cable select" but not master/slave settings. Could be an issue you may want to look into. A replacement motherboard at this level could be purchased on ebay for around $10 USD. Might solve some of your problems.

Then again, for $299 US, you can buy a whole brand new pentium 4 system from dell.

Good luck!

Re: Pentium II and double IDE hard drive issue

Thanks for your help utopic.
Tried all combinations letting the BIOS run through it's changes a few times each jumper setting and cable setting change... but always end up not being able to access the drive if it does finally boot up... really really annoying considering this thing takes about 2 mins just trying to get through the Bios when it's not throwing it's toys outta the cot...

I'm pretty sure it's the out dated bios that's my biggest problem, and the fact that it's a compaq... F10 is the key to press to get to it but it just has the word SETUP come up at the bottom right of the screen with no other info...

It'll be very hard to fing a MOBO to fit this case as all the slots for PCI come off a riser board that make the cards parallel to the mobo for a massive cooling fan.

I might just bin the expansion project for now as I only need it to run word and a dial up connection...

The PC was used in a printing office of a magazine and booklet printing firm and was connected to about four printers all using SCSI cables. All of the printers had advanced trouble shooting modes that required a fully functional computer as their print server.

Thanks again UTOPIC
