My hard drive crashed at work a couple weeks back, and the tech team has been working to restore it. I wasn't too worried about anything bad on it, since I was smart enough not to have any porn at work. Or so I thought.

My manager calls me in his office this afternoon, and in there is our VP of Engineering. He tells me that while IT was trying to recover my crashed hard drive, they had found about a dozen old porno pictures, and showed me a printout of the photos - a couple nudes, some lesbians, some bondage stuff - pictures that I didn’t even know I had on there. I didn’t even recognize most of it, some I think I got from my buddy a couple years ago through emails and probably just saved it and forgot about it. They told me some could be from temp files but it still doesn’t matter. It was embarrassing but the bosses were relatively cool about it, considering the situation. I took full responsibility, since it was on my hard drive, but it still was humiliating. I had to sign a sheet that will go into my file about corporate policy and the fact I had porn on my computer. AND I have to take the next sexual harassment class.

At least I didn’t get fired. They said that, because of my performance (I've been here 5 years), I deserve a second chance. But in my mind there goes any chance for me to get promoted…Yeah, yeah, DUH right? The funny thing is, its stuff that I never realized I had. There’s about a dozen or so people here that send that stuff around by email, they have been for years and I never save it but I bet it’s in a temp file somewhere on my hard drive. That’s where they said most of this came from. Like I said, it’s my responsibility but it still sucks. And I know better, that’s the worst part. Everyone knows not to have that garbage at work. What a dumbass….grrrrrrrrrr. And I still have to tell my wife tonight.

Anyone else have any similar stories toi help me not feel like the only workporn moron?

Well, I only access the internet from home, so I have nothing to fear. It seems your company is rather stuff-shirted about this, I mean, everyone has porn on their computer. These were in your temp files of all places. I think they should be looking out for the guy who is surfing online for it when he should be working. Not so much that he is looking at porn but because he isn't working.

lol whenever the tech guys come to fuck with my files, and try to open test files, they ask if its porn.

I got reprimanded at a job once for the same thing. Someone sent me a video, they caught it, I got shit. Later, the boss claimed to have found more on my comptuer....and he asked me to resign...nevermind the fact that Ifucked some girl he was in love with but didn't have the balls to ask her to be with him.

Yeah. That is a tricky one. I am probably playing with fire, but because I work in a small business and do all the tech support there is no one else who even knows where to look.

Most companies only bust you or hold it against you if you are surfing at work or if you are sending/forwarding it from work. The bad part is that email will often save things to your temp files when all you do is open an attachment in an email. No saving to disk required.

It sounds like you will be okay. If I were you I would want to know where they found it. I would sure like to know if they were items that I had opened in email as apologizing for opening an inappropriate email from a friend seems to be less of an offense than surfing or sending them out.

Thats tough man, who doesnt have porn somewhere on their P.C. in this day and age. Dont know what U.S. policy is on reprimands on personal files, but over here in Ireland as long as theres no repeat offence it has to be removed after a year. And im working for a U.S. company. So it might be worth your while checking that out, there might be light at the end of the tunnel.

Same thing happened to the pastor at my old church. He was preaching about how careful you have to be about what you click in your e-mails and on the internet, told us about how he got some innocent-looking e-mail, opened the attachment, and it was porn. Stupid thing was, the church leadership etc. didn't seem to understand that it was an accident (elderly, non-computer people, I'm sure) and had him CANNED. Of course, the headline was then "Senior pastor fired for internet porn." Totally ruined him - he didn't even do anything wrong, and was so up-front about it that he used it in a sermon and that's how the whole thing started! I still can't believe it.

1. Send an e-mail to your buddies asking them not to send "those kind" of pictures to you in e-mail. E-MAIL IS NOT A PRIVATE FORM OF COMMUNICATION!!! The pictures in an e-mail are really setting in some server the IT guys can get to if asked.

2. You serioulsy lucked out not getting canned. And yes, that note in your file may slow down or stop permotions. Keep your nose clean and be a good boy in harrasment class. May also be a good time to sharpen the resume and start looking, just in case.

3. A good IT guy can spot the "eraser programs" and that may be a company rule violation as well. I won't even talk about the router log files that may be recording the sites you visit at work.

4. Ask the IT guys to verify, in writing, that your computer is porn free. That way any old stuff won't bite you in the ass at some future date.
