Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
I had a friend get fired for surfing porn at work. I think they fired him because instead of assisting clients he was surfing porn. We had a guy fill his hard drive up at work and then didnt understand why it was running so slow. He didnt get in trouble for it because my boss is pretty cool about that stuff. We did have websense on our computer the next week though.

Dude most private companies will fire you, infact you generally sign a contract regarding the content and uses of office computers, it clearly says you can be terminated if you use company property to store inapporiate material, infact at my old job they could monitor any websites you visited and would email a list of naughty sites anyone visited to our Director of Technology, being a computer tech I had to deal with this issue alot. People honestly always had some strange stuff on their computers.

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
As the porn police for my firm, I can tell you straight up that not only will those "erase all traces" programs not fool me, they actually trigger an audit of the machine. Our router logs all traffic by workstation. Normally, if I find a little pr0n on a workstation, I simply delete it remotely.
The funny shit is catching the traffic in the logs while the user is still surfing/saving it. They save it, I delete it. They get confused and save it again, and I delete it right before their eyes. Then I do realtime monitoring of the connection and block the sites as they are clicking on them. It's some seriously entertaining shit I can tell you. The only time it gets serious (management involved) is if it is a recurring problem, which the above normally curbs pretty quickly, or if it is some seriously twisted shit like kiddy or something of that ilk. Then it is and the man gets involved.
And any IT guy worth his salt can tell instantly from the logs whether the pr0n came from spam (common) or whether the clicked it 1000 times.

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
Hrrm.. nice bump.
But to answer the question - why would you try to have porno on your work computer. Ok - there are times when its purely accidental - you recieve it through an email from a collegue and you honestly don't know where it came from. But all in all the golden rule is keep porno to your home computer - don't open personal email at work and there is nothing that you will have to fear.
Like seriously if you are at work and you are in Images and Cinemas section of WR you must understand that you will get reprimanded. If you can't go a working day without looking at porno you really have problems....

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
lol, I'm a tech and have to fix a lot of customer PC's that they bring to me, and for the most part they do NOT delete their porn. I have so many dvd's I've collected of other peoples porn from their PC it's not funny, lol.
The good ones are when they're personal pics of the wife lol.
For the most part I find porn on about 60% of all PCs I look at, including work PC's that have crashed but we don't take it very seriously. We shrug it off and say oh well, as long as the work get's done all is well.

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
Really I mean is looking at porn at work so bad! If you get your work done then you should be alright. Shit I come in on the weekend and surf a little shit maybe even rub one out but who cares! This freaking country is so uptight about sex that is rediculous. Now I don't believe in the kiddie stuff but really who are you hurting by looking at some naked woman or man. A guy got caught in the company I am at now I don't think they did anything to him except reprimand him. The part that I found disgusting is how every one knew. I would think you IT guys would definetly would know how to keep your mouths shut. And if you didn't there should be some type of retrabution for the employee. But then again I love me some porn.

You may have a point there, I know I've been guilty, like most, of puttin porn on the puter, but as Net Admin of a small city its my job to maintain the integrity of our data systems from end user on up. If I allow too many to d/l porn, then its my ass. Thats why some IT depts let it slide and others dont, it all has to do with their company/gov. policy.

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
Porn is for your private uses whether it be at home or wherever else you are on YOUR time. You are getting payed to work, not to look at Finley's amazing threads. I would even tend to disagree. America isn't uptight about set AT ALL. Turn on the TV at 1:00, you will know what I am talking about. But reguardless work is for work. Your boss is not paying you to look up porn, even if you can doubletask, do that stuff on your own time.

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
lots of progs out there for permanent erasure.......some with algorithms that make them non legal in the mighty US of A as they can't be unravelled by the military and so are classed as munitions!!
I use one called Eraser 5.7 but here in NZ...a freebie developed at one of the Uni's has the ability to tidy up so even destruction of the HD and recovery using tunnelling electron microscopy etc still can't recover anything. Everytime a file is written over there are small end tags of info and changes in registration of the data write which result in "shadows" of the original information which can be recovered down to seven or so rewrites deep!!
Most systems do multiple writes using randomly generated numbers of strings of 01010 etc to obfuscate the original data by burying it under meaningless layers of junk. So the simple answer is don't let anyone near your machine if it's compromised, use a proprietory cleaner on a regular basis and let run overnight...btw...total format of the disc doesn't get rid of the info either. A good blast of microwave might do the trick once the case is open.

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
One day at MCI, I was down in the network manager's office when some other manager came down yelling and screaming. Seems he'd purchased a (then-the-absolute-biggest-you-could-get) 40G harddrive for his group to use as a network drive, yet the engineers he'd spoken with had only started to use it, and it was full. Turned out one of the engineers had stuffed it with porn movies in just 1 week's time.
Another job I had (with Pagemart) one of the married programmers was fired for porn at work. I'd been in his cube and caught him on dating services, and thought that wasn't a good sign, weeks before.
I know work can be seriously dull, but having done some computer networking, I do know that it isn't smart at all to surf porn in any big company. It's just too easy for one of the network employees to find out who is surfing where.
...but I can certainly say "you are not alone". ;-)

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
I work for a university here in Aus, and i can tell you straight up, porn is a breach of our acceptable use policy, and a sacking offence. Not only can it be tracked down to a workstation, but also to a specific profile on that machine. Ultimately, a user is responsible for their profile, so the excuse "someone must have gotten my password" doesn't work, you're still fucked. I had a colleague walk in on me once with some stuff up on screen, but never heard anything about it, so I guess it wasn't reported.
If you got busted and came out with your job intact, thats a pretty good result in my opinion

Re: So I got caught with porn on my computer at work...
A sniffer I use to analyze our network traffic called Iris, will not only capture packets but will reasseamble them to show me what someone is looking at that very moment. In fact the data collected was used as evidence in a court case against an employee accused of violating our staff policy, which resulted in loss of position and a hefty fine. Perhaps our orginization is too strict regarding this subject but lets face it, by no means should anyone be payed to download porn unless they are in the industry.
