While Kobe Bryant — one of the most popular NBA superstars today — faces a charge of sexual assault, questions about the emotional stability of the 19-year-old UNC student accusing Bryant have surfaced.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, several UNC students spoke exclusively to The Mirror about the young woman they know. Some students agreed to speak without their names being used to protect the identity of the accuser, whose name has not been released by police or the media.

The young woman in question completed her freshman year at UNC in May. She lived in one of the primarily freshmen residence halls on campus and spent her days pursuing a passion for music, despite having not yet declared a major.

Close friends say she was active in the school choir and was a charismatic and loyal friend.

“She was very nice and someone that would be there for you,” said Rich Fredrick, a UNC sophomore who lived in the same residence hall as the accuser.

However, other friends describe a darker, more troubled side.

“She had issues with her boyfriend,” one close friend said “They fought throughout the school year. Then they broke up. She was upset about it.”

Two friends recounted the evening of Feb. 25, when the accuser overdosed on medication, and UNC police and local medical personnel had to transport her to North Colorado Medical Center for treatment.

“During the year, the cops and an ambulance came and took her away,” another resident said. “We all knew she had some health issues. We were concerned … We didn’t see her in class for a few days.”

UNC Police Chief Terry Urista confirmed Monday that UNC police contacted the accuser Feb. 25.

“We did respond to the residence hall,” he said. “We took her into custody and transported her to the hospital.”

However, Urista declined to comment on the details surrounding the transport and treatment.

The accuser’s problems didn’t end there, friends said.

Classmates and friends who know the young woman said male guests frequently visited her overnight.

One resident said the accuser bragged about her sexual encounters, including one with a celebrity look-alike while she auditioned last year in Texas for the popular TV show “American Idol.”

Reports such as these may raise questions about the validity of the accuser’s claim that Bryant sexually assaulted her June 30 at the Lodge and Spa at Cordillera in Edwards, Colo.

Denver-based attorney Pamela Mackey, lead council for Bryant, may consider the wide speculation about the accuser’s emotional stability in making a case for her client’s defense. Mackey’s office, however, “is in general not granting interviews at this time,” a secretary said Tuesday. Mackey stated July 14 her client will plead not guilty to the charge.

“Mr. Bryant is innocent and expects to be completely exonerated,” Mackey said in a statement released to The Mirror.

Neither the accuser nor her parents returned The Mirror’s repeated phone calls for comment.

Since the encounter, Mark Hurlbert, Eagle County district attorney, has indicted Bryant on a felony charge of sexual assault. Bryant admitted at a press conference Friday in Los Angeles that he did, in fact, have sex with the young woman but said it was consensual. If convicted, Bryant could receive four years to life in prison. He is scheduled to appear Aug. 6 in Eagle County court.

A close friend of the accuser told The Mirror the alleged victim is planning on returning to Greeley but not attending UNC.

Don't know whether EXACTLY Monica, she was good at giving Ex-POTUS foreplay on her knees. For Kate, nothing from PH said she was on knees performing. So doesn't look like rape, force, or restraint. The media makes Kate out to be with every "Tom, Dick and Harry." The dirty underwears from three weeks ago, being re-worn to go for forensic exam seems to be exculpatory with other's semen. Looks like physical evidence so far doesn't add up to a conviction either. :rock:

Hi Eddie, from what I can remember, it was the local sheriff that was behind this with Kate's parents. Kate seems to be dragged into this somewhat unwillingly to file the fuzzy rape charge. The investigating detectives weren't so sure from their fact findings. Mrs. Faber had city hall connections and pulled a couple of strings, looking to score a huge lottery jackpot. The Sheriffs went directly to the DA and said they have enough proof to arrest Kobe the next day. :suckit: The ball started rolling; the media went ballistic. The DA was a rookie and was shopping for an answer, to file or not to file rape charges asking other local DAs for their opinions. Everyone seems to be inexperience. This was the next trial of the century. Small town cops vs. big time out-of-town superstar. :smellass: It's like a minor traffic incident; the local dunkin donut cops are going to give the non-resident a legal citation. :smellass: No discretionary breaks as usual but for the local yokels. They were hell bent on getting Kobe, because the Sheriffs and Mrs. Faber got their teeth onto Kobe's rear end and refused to let go. One way or another, this out-of-towner was going to have to be inconvenienced and come stand trial before the local town judge. Of course, the local Sheriffs, DAs and Judges know each other on their first name basis. The small town has about 3000 people who consistently live there year-round. Their entire economy is to suck money off the out-of-towner's. This was one of their biggest heist ever. Wasn't going to let this opportunity get away from their hands. That's why Eagle can't seem to part justice fairly.
Fast forward three months to now and learning of the Preliminary Hearing facts discovered and reported to the world. The right thing would be for the Rookie DA who holds the decision to continue or withdraw from the fuzzy rape charge to re-evaluate and drop all charges, [/U] or to lower the charge to some misdemeanor. Since Mark Hurlbert, Eagle County district attorney, was elected locally and this has turned political, Hulber can exercise his office's discretion whether to brings a felony charge of sexual assault to placate his local constituents without all the hard evidence. Will he or won't he throw in the towels? Will the locally elected judge have the ballzz to throw out the fuzzy wuzzy charges? Or will the local-yokels call it a day and save millions of taxpayer money? What do you think? :help: Still have enough probable cause, but NOT enough hard proofs for beyond a reasonable doubt? This incident will set back true rape victims' causes. The famous saying goes: bad cases make bad case law.

None of the Prosecutors claims are correct. They said Kobe choked the girl... yet there was no markings on her neck. They said they found semen in her panties... yet that's not even Kobe's semen. All that bullshit has been proven to be incorrect.

Mark Hurlbert is a fucking joke. This whole case is bullshit. And it should have never even gotten to this point.

they got NOTHING on Kobe.

there is no way to prove that he raped her. unless they got videotape of it.

other than that, it's up to the lawyers to batte each other out to see who can come up with the most convincing bullshit, and sway the jury.

Yep, the Kobe case is turning out to be a limp dick. First Eagle County had a hard-on for Kobe. They shot their load and can't get it up anymore. Kobe has a deep pocket and he can take his good old time over and over and over. Some stud heh? Yes, he should. But he's not going to, becuz he's probably personal friends with the Prosecuting attorneys and the police detectives.
And he probably knows Kate's mom too.
And of course he doesn't want to embarrass all of his friends in high places, and he doesn't want to give his small town a bad rep.
Therefore, he can't throw the case out, becuz he doesn't have the balls to.

but the Prosecution has weak evidence, infact no evidence. It's very disappointing for all the fans of the Prosecutors. haha. Mark Hurlbert is pathetic. he can't hang with the big dogs. all his tactics have backfired. Pamela Mackey has an incredible track record, and she's gonna destroy the opposition. The question in her mind is not "can she win one juror in favor of Not Guilty"(becuz that's all it takes to win the case), but "how many can she sway in favor of Not Guilty" becuz it's already a given that Kobe's gonna be set free. But she won't stop at one juror. She's gonna do her magic and convince all 12 of them, just to rub it in Mark Hurlbert and Kate's face.

the only thing that the Prosecutors have on Kobe is the blood sample from his shirt that matches her blood. But, just wait... i'm sure there's gonna be yet another twist to weaken that evidence as well.

Hahahaha, you're so funny sometimes. I got a good laughter out of that with Mackey doing her court room magic. She'll just walk in wearing her huge pearl necklace and mesmerized the twelve jurors and alternates to hang the jury. I think there will be some hold-outs to wanna convict Kobe too. The voire dire would be very important; the relocation of venue would be better. But where can she take it? To Mars, where no one knows or been pre-influenced by the sensational media already? Not likely. So far, the Defense has been holding close to her vest, their evidence. At the Prelim Hearing, the DAs hold the strings. They yank it the direction they want. Defense just watch and wait for their opportunity. So far Pamela Mackey got her stuff together and will not hesitate to jump at any opportunity to destroy the Prosecution's prematured conclusions that Kobe is guilty as sin of the rape charges. Do you think the Eagle DAs will lower the charge to some misdemeaner? They need a ladder.

Hi Hailbe, welcome to the BB. I just got here a week ago. I hear Singapore is clean and virtually crime free. Had Kobe been tried there, will he get caned, bobbitized or the chair? And how do you know so much about the Kobe trial, from CNN and cable news networks? I happened to agree with you also as to Kate not having a prayer to win a conviction, after what turned up since last week. The jury would have to be a bunch of morons from Eagle County, Colorado. Behind this all, I'm not even sure whether Kate wanted to report it as a rape. Probably her mommy pushed her into the car, drove daughter to Police station, and cried "rape, rape, rape." From there, Kobe's ass was grassed. :hass:

Im not sure if she even has enough evidence to win a civil case. Kobe should file a civil suit also for defamation of character. I think he has a stronger civil case than she does.
