Windows 2000 Professional Desktop all screwed up

My home PC is quite used to tripping on sudden blackouts that we have in our locality every once in a while(I have been a lazy ass and haven't bought a UPS for it as its an old geyser running P-III, 800Mhz...something like that)

...but 2 days back after it tripped, it got all screwed up. Won't boot even in safe mode....tried everything and gave up. Next day morning, it booted up (dont ask me how) but all applications that need TCP/IP were throwing errors (Dr. Watson shit). Disabled all those apps (Zone Alarms, YM, Skype) and rebooted, went into BIOS to load default values (As the time was all screwed up) and rebooted again. It boots now, (takes an aweful long time though), gets IP from the DHCP (my wireless router) (ipconfig shows IP) but it unable to ping the DHCP server even. Internet Explorer is not working at all (not even the set up page of Router)

In the device manager its showing me two "unknown" devices under Ethernet adpaters (apart from my usual NIC), which I am now allowed to uninstall.

I do have the W2K CD and know that I can re-install OS on C drive (Most of my data is in D drive, which is a partition on same disk) but is that the only way....and is there a chance I may lose data in this process?? Another shitty thing is that have no drivers (the PC was given to me by someone else and all he gave me was W2K CD but no drivers on CD nor on disk).

Don't tell me I am fucked......ok tell me, if you must

(At least I can chat with some expert here during weekend on YM using my laptop that I am writing this from. Somebody willing to help me over YM can let me know that via a PM)

You're sort of fucked.
First, I hope you've learned your leason and plan to go out and get a UPS and soon....suggestion get APC brand.

If you can at all figure out what drivers you need; video, audio, chipset/mobo, NIC, modem, whatever else. Then you can easily go to the maker's website and download them. But you have to know what you have before hand.

Personally I've given up on partitions and stick with 2 physical drives.
If you can make yourself a copy of BartPE (Live CD of Win2k/XP) http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/ Then you should be able to boot from that and do a drag-and-drop backup from your C to your D of every single file if need be, even those that would normally be in use. Atleast this way you can make sure you've backed up your account folder which has your emails and a number of other things that are unique to each account user (you might be surprised to find what is in there sometimes).

Then boot from your 2000 CD and format the C partition and reinstall.

The best way to go is to go to www.knoppix.com and download there lynux program that loads from a CD and allows you to do the file transfer. This is a great little tool cuz you pop it in the cd and boot from it.

That's what BartPE is only it's Windows base. It's called a Live CD.
BTW it's Linux not Lynux

Re: Windows 2000 Professional Desktop all screwed up

Thanks for the suggestions.....in the mean time I uninstalled ZA and Ethernet card driver and reinstalled the Ethernet driver (got in from my laptop via the vendor's site). So now no more errors and Internet is working fine, the comp is slow but its alive....I guess will re-load the OS one of these days.....
