OK, I'm looking to buy a gaming laptop and ive been told to get one with an AMD Athlon 64 processor as it is the best for gaming. Ive found one with an Athlon 64 3200+. However, it only runs an 2.0ghz. And while this is fast enough to play the most of the latest games atm, i dont know how long it will last. I know it is a very good processor but what i want to know is, will it be able to play future games as i want it to last a while!! Advice would be apreciated muchly :happycow:

Re: AMD Athlon 64

Don't worry too much about AMD's clock speeds. As strange as this might sound, it means nothing.
And with the Athlon 64's the model number; 3000, 3200, 3400, etc, just means the higher the number it is the better and faster it is over it's slower number.

With AMD XP chip series, the number here means it runs like that of a an Intel P4. For example; AMD XP 1800+ with a clock speed of 1.53GHz performs like a P4 1.8GHz, at the same time a XP 3200+ with a clock speed of 2.2Ghz performs like a P4 3.2Ghz. Back then it made since, sort of. But now with the Athlon 64's it's different, I'm not sure how off hand.

The reason AMD's slower clock speeds can keep up with P4's clock speed chip, if not even out perform in some cases, is because AMD does the work more efficiently.

Re: AMD Athlon 64

Well, I love AMD and hate Intel. But I'm not going to lie, I dunno if AMD is best for laptops yet. If you're buying the laptop purely for gaming, I highly recommend you do otherwise and buy a desktop, for the same price you can get (or build one if you can, do some research) a better desktop. The problem with the 64s is the power usage, you'll only get something like 2 hours of battery time with it. Also, I've seen many gaming laptops and they always are crappy b/c they overheat unless you prop them up on shit (forget about leaving it on your lap unless you wanna roast your balls) I have seen one good one, it was my friends and it was an Athlon 64, I dont remember what company made it so be warry when buying one; online reviews are your best friend for computer parts. I would suggest an Asus laptop, unfortunately they dont have any AMD (prolly b/c Intel forced them not to)

Re: AMD Athlon 64

You should be able to play any game with that processor but more important is what type of video does it have. Most likely it will not compare to a desktop, however you can get a good card and then get driver updates that allow it to run most games of today and for tmrw there will be new drivers to support the new games. For a good laptop with xcelnt screen and awsome graphics ur gonna cough up some dough, so you might wanna consider the desktop.
