Re: Error loading os

What might be happening is that some Windows file became corrupt somehow. If you have a XP disk, use that as a boot disk and mess around in the recovery console. Also if you have the disk you can re-install windows possibly without reformating the drive.

Re: Error loading os

Can you get into the F8 function? If so you could try having it start from the last known good configuration.
The recovery console: When it boots from the XP disc you can go into a repair mode and see if it will find and repair the problem. I tried that before and it didn't work for me, but might for you.
Other than that I would burn what you need off and then reformat and install XP again.

Re: Error loading os

Try booting to the Windows XP CD. When the options come up where you can select repair using the recovery console, select it. It will ask which Windows installation to repair and it will list all of them (usually just one). Select it by number (remember that your number pad is probably inactive so use the main keyboard) then it will give you what looks like a C prompt. This is not your normal C prompt. It is the recovery prompt and it will accept commands. If you type "help" it wil list the commands available. One is "fixboot". This rewrites the boot sector which re-installing the OS does not do. When you do this you should also do the one called "fixmbr" which re-writes the master boot record that was written at the last time the HD was formatted and has been sitting in the last sector on the HD waiting for this command.

They are easy to use. At the recovery console prompt just type the command and follow the instructions. You'll get warnings and verification prompts.

Burn your important data to CD or a network drive first. I've seen this action fail and require a format, but it usually works cleanly.
