My 6 yr old IBM manual says my memory banks[DIMM1 & DIMM2] will hold only up to 64mgs of Ram. It says anything above 64 is NOT catachable! 'Puter came with 32mgs. A few yrs ago, I removed the 32 strip and put in a 64 strip. Dramatically improved performance. The Crucial Memory website claims my model has a limit of 256mgs. What is going on here? Have the memory manufacturers done something to make a larger amount catchable or are they simply wrong?

well, quite frankly. IBM sucks and I would just go ahead and get 256 and see what happens. But in all seriousness, Dell, IBM Gateway, Compaq, they all do this. They try to make your computer un-compatable with any except if it is from the company (even though one of the strong points abut computers is something called backwards-compatability where you can still use a computer from 1986 if you wanted to for example.) Anyways, i digress, I've had to fix my cousin's and my sister's IBm computers recently and quite frankl, they are very bad and I really suggest just try to get some differnet computer for like 300@$ or even less. Since you seem to know how to build your own computer somewhat, try www.newegg.com. that is a great website for buying all these great computers, they also sell PCs from HP and Sony (the Vaio) if you're not up for building your own computer (it is really easy though) and well, good luck, I rreally suggest u get a new computer though

I have run into this problem myself. What I found is that if you have an early production model that the manual will list diffrent specs than what is listed now on the net. So it depends on what generation board you have ( early or late production). Only shure way that I have found to know is to plug in the larger amount and see if the bios sees it and can tell how big it is. Since the machine is rather old it shouldnt be hard to get some cheap memory to experament with. There might also be a bios flash that will update it to the newer specs. try typing the model number into google and doing a search for motherboard updates.

LOL...when I bought it 6 yrs ago 32mgs was fine. I have that original 32 stick. I'm going to drop it in with the 64 and see what happens!

Thats probably the best thing to check first, but I'd look up your motherboard online, from the manufacturors website or a good hardware website. The company that makes memory wont know shit about your motherboard.

I put in the old stick and the machine recognizes it and uses it with the newer one. The difference is noticeable, so the Memory Co. is correct.

I actually have a PC that is almost 8 years old. I can't tell you how much I have had to upgrade or repair, but it is a good CPU to let my wife destroy

Hey i have a 5 year old machine and currently it's running vista, with the right specs brought at the time you can make a machine last long. I hvae upgraded it but no more than $100 worth of parts.

But 64mb of 6 years i am sure they had like 256mb then cos windows me came out. Anyway u should really invest in another pc, use ebay if you have to!!! Doesn't have to be a big investment to upgrade from yours. lol

cachetable is different than addressable .

your motherboard might be limited as to how much ram is addressable in each slot . for example , you might have to put a 128 meg stick in each slot in order for the motherboard to address it correctly .

the fellows at a reputable supplier will be able to answer your questions ... if push comes to shove , you can download and install a spiffy little program that tells the pertanent poop on your system ... some of the suppliers can point you to an addy to dl it from or send it to you via email . there is a way to use windows to get the info but it is limited and a pain in the butt .

ram for your machine should be fairly cheap ... don't bother with the high-dollar stuff ... non ECC is good enough ... you aint runnin' a server . in some cases the "older" ram is getting harder to find and consequently the price is going up .

what OS are you running ? if you are trying to run XP with less than 256 megs yer' whistlin' in the wind ... yeah , they say that it will run but it will be writing to/from the swap file a lot and be s-l-o-w .
don't even try vista with less than a gig ... and a 3 GHZ proccessor .

buying a 300 dollar comp (eg : emachines *choke gag puke*) is like winding up in the rack with a 5 dollar hooker ... 'nuff said . save up your money and invest in/build a real machine .
