(maybe someone more adept than myself could add it ?) licupssy ... the bus terminal area in augusta ga (76-77) was not good . besides the gays there were the muggers . if you had short hair and/or in uniform you were a potential target . we were told to NOT go anywhere by ourselves ... a group of two or three was safer . then there were the store owners that would rip off service men ... jewlery shops etc . the opposite side of the coin were store owners that posted a sign in the window with words to the effect of "if you are in uniform , you are not welcome" . my old staff sgt told me how things had changed over the years ... pretty sad .

San Diego was real bad for trying to rip off servicemen. Back during the Vienam war era downtown was packed with boots and shipboard sailors. I use to get a laugh out of all those jewlery salesmen standing outside the store trying draw in the boots. Being stationed at NAS Miramar I past thru downtown quite a bit until I got a car. There was only one bus that went to NAS Miramar. The squadron I was assigned to VF124 was a training sqaudron
(also the original Top Gun training school). They were pretty lack on the regular personnel. I had grew my hair long (combed down to my chin) and we didn't wear uniforms off base. The salesmen probably thought I was a hippy with short cut hair with my brightly colored shirts & bell bottom pants and sandles or loafers without socks.
