Re: What is wrong with hip hop today?
Hey i love the old school and bought the old school music like NWA, 2pac,ghetto boys,ice-t,ice-cube,above the rim, menace 2 society, juice soundtracks, comptons most wanted, i love all that old school stuff but there's some good stuff out these days too.Not really into 50 cent BUT i did enjoy wanksta and pimp.Gone are the days of the great battles of Dre and Eazy E and ak-47's ringing out of compton for the fun off it but as long as Hip Hop is around and world wide then the old school artists and more recent great artists like 2pac done their job well spreading the word of hip hop.
My only problem is after all the years of shit between 2pac and Nas and jay-z and piggy smalls, 2pac's mom or someone very close to his music rights gave those artists 2pac tracks and lyrics to use to boost their own cd sales...2pac would be rolling over in his grave listening to that awful bonnie and clyde shit.

Re: What is wrong with hip hop today?
It's funny to hear it called old school since I was listening to that stuff when it first came out. I guess I'm ol' skool too! haha!
As for the rap game today... it seemed to stray from it's originality and has become very artificial. All you see is who has the biggest "bling factor" and the most women. The musical/artistic content has taken a backseat to all that.
Magazines talk about Fifty Cent being the next Tupac, but if you look at how hard Eminem works at writing and producing and pushing the public's buttons to get a reaction, he's more like Tupac. They write with emotion and feelings from their disturbed past.
But guys like "Puff the Magic Diddy" only care about the $$$. Gettin' your $$ is fine but don't let it take the driver's seat from the music. Puff also talks about his clothesline as being up there with Armani... I don't think so. I also think he's riding the coat tails of the deceased.
In a few years I wonder how many of those rappers with the huge "cribs", bling and Bentley's are all going to be broke like Hammer?

Re: What is wrong with hip hop today?
You know whats fun to watch if you ever get the chance, watch MTV Cribs The Best Off and i can guarantee you'll see visits to rappers homes and they aren't even around anymore.
The shelf life for rappers and R&B singers these days is a year at most then their CD's and DVD's get reduced in price and you never hear of them again.
Look at All Eye'z On Me by 2pac, that album is still being sold here in the U.K for over 20 pound, thats 36 or 37 Dollars to you. Now thats a shelf life for any modern artist to try and live up to.

Re: What is wrong with hip hop today?
Wow! It's still that expensive for 2Pac! That's reason enough to download it off the 'net. Not that anyone does that anymore, I've "just heard" it was done.

America can keep the Jay-z's and piggy smalls and nas's but the only hip hop artists with credit here in the U.K are 2pac,Dre,Eminem,50 Cent,...ummm....ummm..... you get my point. Only a hand full of American hip hop artists are worthy of success worldwide and these wannabe gangsters and pop rappers havn't got a clue.
Take this joke of a person called Damian Dash, this fucking idiot tried to re-launch Posh Spice to the world with a Rap album but her record company told both Posh and Dash to stick the album up there asses cuz it was that bad. As for Cameron, he sure got a good talking down to by Bill Orielly and was put in his place lol.
It's all about money and clothing and bling, nothing more and nothing less. I remember the old Yo MTV Raps and NWA being interviewed in the back of a lorry heading through Compton wearing the basic gangster gear of Kings and Raiders caps and an attitude, they were the good old days.

Re: What is wrong with hip hop today?
does anyone have the vision that comes without blinders, to see this same exact pattern in essentially ALL the other genre's of music? and not just in the past few years either? You can set the way back machine, for when Mozart was spinnin heads (1756-1791) and know that there were a TON of composers who didn't make the historical cut. Pick an Era, pick a genre, and look closely. At the time, many were jumping on that particular bandwagon, but as time passed, only few survived in the collective archives. Without using Google (or any other information tool), name a few Rap artists from the early 80's... you know... the ones people used to Break Dance to. Then, as you start getting impressed with yourself, do some searches, and see how many MORE artists there were. Only a handful of ANY artists are worthy of success world wide. American or not (Just had to slip that in Tiger, this isn't all on you)

Re: What is wrong with hip hop today?
mainstream hip hop is wrong with hip hop... it's so foul how other rapper portray something they're really not and how record companies sign artists that have similar styles with other sucess rappers in the industry...there's really not a lot of variety in the mainstream
