so I want to learn to play the guitar...
so i can play the freebird solo over and over.
am I better off just taking lessons, or is there some type of program/material available that makes it fairly easy to pick up by myself, and should I buy an electric or acoustic to start on?

Re: so I want to learn to play the guitar...
Thanks, Dingle. I will definately keep that in mind. When I was about 12. my dad bought me a Fender stratocaster, and a little peavey amp, but I never learned to play it, and I ended trading it for something.

practice lots, dont get discouraged, and yeah if you do lessons u will progress faster. if u choose the self taught route (i did) go to the library and find some books (hey its free). drop by this site too.. http://www.cyberfret.com.

Re: so I want to learn to play the guitar...
I know it's been said to death already, but you'll be much better off if you take some lessons first. Instructional videos and the like just don't provide the same level of instruction, although I understand that they can supliment lessons pretty well if you feel the need while practicing.

Re: so I want to learn to play the guitar...
I started playing Bass when i was 10 and i never took lessens i just started palying what sounded good and whatnot, i wish i would have but never had the money. Then when we could afford the internet i started finding free tab all over the internet printing it out and playing what i downloaded. I would start by getting an instructional video they are very good my friend just got one and he is learning pretty fast.
As far as the brand goes i have been loyal to Ibanez and so has everyone in the little "band" i am in they just give us the sound we want. Start hitting up pawn shops to see what they have to offer you can sometimes get really good deals on good stuff, just try it before you buy it on one of the amps they have there. That is where i would start. go to your local music store and most of them have a bin by the checkout counter that have a pile of cords in there for a buck each. Pic wise just grap a handfull of all differant size's and thickness you will have to find out which size and thickness is good for you. Shoulder strap all are pretty much the same i use ernie ball since they are pretty cheap. Case wise if you just want something to sit in your room just grap a gig bag if you are going to be going places w/ the guitar get a hard case because the neck will warp very easily and you will be doing neck adjustments on it every week.
i think that is good enough for a start.

Re: so I want to learn to play the guitar...
just keep up with it. when i started i felt like my fingers were re tarted. they wouldnt move the way i wanted them to. but the more you play the more natural it will become for you. but ill tell you what if you stop playing you will defenetly build some rust. work and school is keeping me from my axes and it shows when i play now.

Re: so I want to learn to play the guitar...
I took lessons for 6 months and got nowhere. I searched for tabs on the internet and now, 1 year later, I can play pretty much anything and i'm writing my own music as well. I recommend teaching yourself.
