Keep in mind, this was only proposed, but I'd like you all to take a look, and tell me what you think.

And for some blatantly biased background

I sure hope that is a joke. I voted for Bush, and support him, but I don't want him in power for ever!!

And what if someone like Al Gore got in!!!!!

Re: New Bill Proposed in the House of Representatives...

Ah, I see you probably only read the second link, when in fact the first one was much more to the point.

Repealling the 22nd amendment would not make whoever was currently President dictator-for-life, but merely allow them to be elected continually until they die.
However, we all know how well "democracy" works without safeguards! (Saddam Hussein had 100% of the votes, for every single election of his reign; QED)

In this age of self-imposed term limits, I don't think this will get serious consideration. But if it does, it would be ironic since most of the Republicans support term limits.

I don't think this will ever get passed (or really even debated). That Amendment wasn't passed until relatively recently and there were few (I can think of one offhand) Presidents that ever exceeded two terms without the restriction.

On a sidenote... more Bush after 2008 = scary.

c'mon, even if it was passed, there are enough checks and balances in place that there would be no dictatorship. there's enough dissent within his own party right now that makes me think that there wouldn't be a Bush third term, even if he had the chance

Keep telling yourself that. I would be very concerned.

Re: New Bill Proposed in the House of Representatives...

For the record, the USA is the only western democracy with a term limit for the top executive job (president, prime minister, etc). Tony Blair has just got elected for a 3rd term in the UK (term is 5 years here) but with a much reduced vote, and is likely to be ousted by his own party before this term is up. 3 terms anywhere in Europe is very rare, and longer is almost unprecedented.

The longer a politician has power, the more unpopular they become: Bush has lower ratings now than before his re-election just like Tony Blair. One problem with a term limit is the "lame duck" thing because everyone knows that a second-term president can't get a third one.

If they do change this rule, your political landscape will change out of all recognition! It actually becomes more democratic IMHO...

Don't panic!

Actually they don't became lame ducks because they don't have to worry about reelection. Second term U.S. Presidents are usually less inhibited to make decision that would be politically risky. But your right about "no term limits would make our republic more democratic". Since we're not a pure democracy, it wouldn't necessarily be a good thing.

Re: New Bill Proposed in the House of Representatives...

The first term of our presidents are spent preparing for the second. The second term is spent making up for the first.

Clinton's second term amuses me. He spent a lot of effort trying to do something memorable so that he will be in all the history books: solve Israel, solve Serbia, etc. Bush seems like he's doing much the same with his social security reform (thank goodness he's failing).

Bush probably wouldn't have a second term if the Dems could've come up with a decent candidate. And don't say Kerry was liberal, because he wasn't.

But I have no opinion about the amendment, too many arguments for either side.

Anymore, I discount anything that comes out of the H. of Rep. Truely thinking they are really the dumbest of the dumb. If you ever watch them on cspan, you would agree.

In addition, keep in mind that Hitler was able to become leader of Germany legally... things like this we do have to be concerned about. Hopefully a few of our elected officials actually will know better than to buy this shit.
