Will backwards compatibility cause older consoles to die out?

As the PS3 and XBOX 360 will be backwards compatible as well as the Nintendo Revolution which will be backwards compatible on a much larger scale.

Will this in turn cause the older consoles that we have had to play such games that were only available on them be killed and buried?

Most likely the XBOX 360 will not have every game or even close to it actually being backwards compadible so the XBOX is safe for a good amount of years. But the PS3 will have every game pretty much from the PS2 and when the PS2 cycle finally ends in a few years will it go the way of the dinosaurs and die out?

As for the Nintendo Revolution, pretty much the large scale backwards compatibility that they propose will wipe out the NES, SNES and N64 consoles from being used pretty much as there won't be a need anymore.

As for the Playstation, since most or all of its games can be played on the PS2 and will most likely be playable on the PS3 isn't it already in the graveyard lol or is its plot dug and its just waiting for the word to jump in lol.

Well, I like to see what you all think on this subject.
