Capital Punishment
Ok sure it's been done before but I'm new here and so are plenty of other folks so maybe the veterans will humor us.
What's your take on capital punishment folks?
An eye for an eye? or Live and learn...rehabilitate and because killing the killer is solves nothing?
Personally I think an incredible amount of money is wasted in this country houses the worst of our society. They live better than many poor children and upstanding although struggling families.
Why not go back to bread and water and hard labor until you've served your time or quickly reached the chair.
Sure there's the argument that innocents will die but in every war innocents die and this is just a war on crime....we'll get it right 89% of the time.

Re: Capital Punishment
I have no problem with the punishment, what I have issues with is when you have cops and especially DA's that are only out for the big W and end up being as crocked as the felon.

Re: Capital Punishment
Well I think itd be good in the cases that you know the guy is 100% guilty. For example if someone is caught red handed killing someone, well then yep he should get fried. but where there is some doubt, well it gets trickier there.

Re: Capital Punishment
I used to think the death penalty was fine and should be used. More and more I worry about sentencing someone to an irreversible fate when there is a chance, however slight, that they may be innocent. There are cases now where DNA evidence, unusable at time of trial, is proving people's innocence.
I say yes only in the most heinous of crimes and only under the most concrete of convictions.

Re: Capital Punishment
I say let the family members of the family choose between indentured servitude to the family, or killing them.

Re: Capital Punishment
If only real CSI teams were as quick and reliable as those on CBS. Our judicial system would be swift and just! Line up the felons or throw em all in the gas chamber and save some money.
Too bad prisoners have more rights than the victims themselves were allowed though. Too bad prisoners are afforded a defense and a chance at getting past their crime while the victim or their family is forever doomed to live with the ramifications of the crime.
It's absolutely pathetic that someone can kill an entire family in minutes or go on a rampage for months as a serial rapist or murderer and then can spend years letting our tax dollars pay for their defense and help them in their plea for life.
I have no sympathy at all for criminals...especially those, crackheads and meth cooks especially in my state that are a drain on my tax dollars. I want them all lined up and shot..or put on road crews or better yet forced to hold my place in line at the DMV while I do something worthwhile with my time.

Re: Capital Punishment
well, putting someone to death by execution costs 10 times as much as life in prison. this is due to the appeals process. I used to be more in favor of CP, but after reviewing the arguments against it, life in prison w/o parole makes better sense. plus, they may become someone's punk in prison, or get the shit beaten out of them, or even murdered themselves.

Re: Capital Punishment
I see your point finley......maybe the answer would be not allowing the prisoners so many privelages.
We need to take away the cable tv, the libraries, the rec rooms, the pool tables, all of that stuff and just make it hard core labor or solitary confinement. As little cost to the law abiding citizens as possible...we'll even include the the non violent criminals with the law abiding citizens since I'm sure we've all toked a little weed or driven with a little liquor in us at some point.........
I wish we could do away with the appeals process but then of course I've not been wrongly convicted of a crime......ok...call me John Kerry...I'm flip floppin

Let the animals take care of themselves. It's cheaper that way.

I agree to a certain point. But just remember most people in prison are non-violent offenders, and they will get out some time. If you make prison one big animal cage, then they are doing nothing but putting animals back on the streets.

Re: Capital Punishment
Part of the reason the death penalty is even considered is due to the belief that somehow human life is sacred, and so taking it away is the ultimate crime. But then you turn around and murder another person. Now yes they committed this horrible crime but it’s still a human life. Now you may say leave it up to the victim’s family, but the criminal has a family as well and death would not punish that man but rather punish his family and that is not justice. Justice would be to make the man’s life a living hell by all mean possible. Do I have a list to what you could do, of course, but there are laws against cruel and unusual punishment in this country so my ideas of torture would just be a waste of time to type them out.

Re: Capital Punishment
We could rip toenails off with pliars for people who try to run away from the cops.
We could clip the end of a guys wanger off if he raped or tried to rape somebody.
We could make them all blind.
We could take body parts and organs from prisoners to help sick kids in need of transplants.
We could never feed them or we could feed them but only when they finished a bunch of work.
Or we could just lock them in a room for the duration of their sentence and if they behave and pass a mental test they get out when it's their turn.

Re: Capital Punishment
well there have been a few good points that i agree with here.
and a sentence to death i think would be better than life in prison. i would HATE to be locked up in a prison for the rest of my life, i would just PRAY for some release, be it death or excape.
but i do agree with taking away their leisure ability. as some one said, life in prison is better than many thousands of people live. some homeless people comit crimes just to go to prison so they can get 3 meals a day! i think we should take away some of the criminals rights and use the saved money to other aspects.
and i do think that the lesser/nonviolent crimes should live in a seperate compound than the violent crimes. and they should also live a better life. but the violent criminals should have hard labor. fixing roads, doing any number of things around the US.

Re: Capital Punishment
The seperate compound part is a great idea. I've heard stories of some fellas that ended up having to do time in a pretty heavy duty prison for a non violent crime, something as stupid as petty theft or in the case of a college buddy...theft by receiving because he bought an entertainment system from someone he considered a friend because they needed money and he needed a system....next thing you know he didn't have money for a good attorney and the prosecuter made an example out of him.
He's in there with hardened criminals getting raped and treated like someone's property. He'll never be the same and in fact may come out of prison a hardened criminal himself bent on revenge. his life will never be the same...of course if prisoners were locked up the way they are supposed to be then maybe they couldn't get to each other's butts
