Who was the best President of all time?
Since my last Presidential thread was so popular for an EOTH (444 views as of right now) I decided to start another one on a similar theme. Who do you guys think has been America's greatest President? I'm gonna start off with Abraham Lincoln. I'll explain why if anyone trys to say that he was crappy. As for now I'll just leave you with a top 5.
Abraham Lincoln
George Washington
Teddy Roosevelt
Thomas Jefferson
Woodrow Wilson
Honorable Mention: Ronald Reagan

Such hard choices, but my favorite is TDR. If only we could find politicians today who would go against their party platforms and act on principles.... hmmm ...John McCain.

Re: Who was the best President of all time?
I am going to say Richard M. Nixon
Yeah, he did unethical things, so did they all. He just got caught.
1) He gave the vote to the 18 year old, as promised.
2) He got us out of Viet Nam, as promised.
3) He ended the draft, as promised.
4) He opened up relations with both the USSR and China.
There never has been a president with the foreign relation skills as he had.

Re: Who was the best President of all time?
Ok. Greatest president of all time was Franjo Tudman (President of Croatia). He stuck by the croats during thick and thin and didnt give up any of the croat generals after the war was over in Bosnia/Croatia.
Sorry I dont know many US presidents - but I must say Clinton - from the media generated here - sure he did have the scandal with lewinsky but he tried to resolve issues diplomatically - correct me if I'm wrong but I dont remember him initiating any agression during his term.

Re: Who was the best President of all time?
It's true Clinton did initiate some aggression, but actually one of the black marks on his presidency are that that he didn't initiate enough. Bush Senior sent troops into Somalia near the end of his term. Then after the battle of Mogadishu where 19 Americans died (the one depicted in the movie "Black Hawk Down") he considered it a PR fiasco and pulled troops out instead of continuing to fight the corrupt warlords ruling the country. Thus the killing and poverty continued. Then when the Rwandan Genocide began Clinton basically did nothing because he was reluctant to intervene in Africa again. Now we have the Sudan crisis and we and the U.N are doing some but I'd like to see more, unfortunately our resources are a bit thin at the moment, and the U.N can't really do crap without us. Anyway, Clinton did like bombing Asprin factories in Kosovo, so he did have some aggression. He really wasn't one of the greatest presidents at all, I don't even think Democrats would list him as the greatest. I'm tired, but tomorrow I'll throw in my take on Nixon...

Re: Who was the best President of all time?
Clucky that Asprin factory wasn't in Kosovo, it was in Sudan, and the attack was carried out due to faulty CIA info.
I think JFK was the greatest president. The Cuban missile crisis was the closest that the world ever came to global thermonuclear war. I met a guy once who worked for Strategic Air Command, and he told me that everyone in the military was certain that a diplomatic solution wouldn't happen, and that war was inevitable.
A lesser man than JFK *coughGWBcough* would have listened to his generals when they councilled air strikes followed by full scale invasion, but Kennedy stuck to his guns and found a way out. Saved the world, IMHO. He would later pay the price for defying the hawks in Washington...

Re: Who was the best President of all time?
Abe Lincoln!? What the hell are you thinking? That boy did some seriously illegal stuff by invading the south which had legally seceeded because of the 10th amendment.
As for the best president...hmmm...I can think of the worst, but I haven't been happy with many. Reagan was pretty good, Nixon was good, but I don't think anyone will deserve the title of best president until they disolve the federal government into an all but powerless entity.

"War Games" -- not the best movie, but the source of three consecutive words in robinbanks' post.
JFK sucked. If he hadn't come along, we would have never heard of JFKerry, and the world would be a better place.
