Debarking: Necessary or Animal Cruelty?

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
For those of you that don't know, debarking is the practice of cutting a dog's vocal cords (generally done by a vet) in order to make them quieter or completely silent.

I personally think that if you can't handle lots of barking, then you shouldn't have dogs.

Debarking, declawing, de-anything to an animal (even neutering and spaying, although I am a little mixed with this) should be outlawed. You don't want the claws, don't get a cat. You don't want the barking, don't get a dog. Get a fucking fish tank and shut the fuck up...really.

I'm gonna go with the others and say it is completely unnecessary. I think overall, it's just stupid. Like Juan said, if you dont like it, get a fish... or you could just train your dog a bit better so they don't bark.

Dogs that bark too much are not properly trained and it's the owners fault. De-barking is the lazy way out, and I think it's cruel.

Debarking is horrible. By my parents house these deff people got their dog debarked and it sounds horrible. People complained that they were barking to much. Their solution was that, debarking, where they could have just as easily taught/trained it better.

Re: Debarking: Necessary or Animal Cruelty?

The whole purpose of having a dog in the ghetto is for it to bark. Home security systems don't deter criminals. We've been without dog for a while now since we put our old pit/boxer down. Only reason they don't mess with out house is the fact that they know we are gun owners and we make friends with all of the neighbors. Caught a crackhead in the alley behind my house a few days ago as I was taking a few tokes; he was trying to take a shit. Opened the water hose with the spear-head on it. Regular pressure on a house is ~60 psi. We have a 1 inch copper line directly from the supply to that hose for pressure washing dad's tools and stuff and get 80-110. He was screaming pretty loud.

Yeah, that is pretty horrible, I mean shit, how would you like it is someone cut your vocal cords. That would be pretty shitty. Declawing, that I can deal with because I could deal with that being done to myself, it would suck, but I could deal. This is definetely animal cruelty.

If a pet owner is willing to pay for that to keep their pet instead of putting it to sleep, thats their business.

It's not just a nail. It's a claw that retracts. It can cause pain later in life as well as emotional damage b/c cats rely on their claws. Also, if the cat gets out into the "wild" they can't defend themselves.

Re: Debarking: Necessary or Animal Cruelty?

I've had a word with my dog Ela and she said "RUFF " loosely translated means
Not a snowball in hells chance.
Fortunately the practice of debarking over here is not common practice so I was unable to ask any of the post op. dogs the same question. I'm sure the answer would have little or no response.

Re: Debarking: Necessary or Animal Cruelty?

Hmm interesting. Never really heard of this practice. I agree that if your dog barks too much its bad training.

Declawing is okay cause cats will scratch up furniture and speakers and whatnot. My cats have never had any problem catching small animals and they don't even need to to eat so I don't think its a big trade off - claws for food and shelter and healthcare.

Debarking I just don't know. Do they still make any noise? I personally like hearing dogs bark every once in a while. I just don't see the dog really being emotionally damaged by this in either case. I don't think it'd be terribly painful procedure either.

Neutering and spaying are just a necessity. The overabundance of domesticated animals just leads to suffering and cruelty. Plus they don't know what they are missing.

Re: Debarking: Necessary or Animal Cruelty?

If people don't want cats with claws or dogs that bark they should stick to cuddly toys, un****** believable !
