iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
Are there any Mp3 players comparable to the iPod in amount of memory and quality, but that don't cost so damn much? I'm looking for something, maybe $100 and about 10 hours of music... where can I get something like that?

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
i have an 1gig iriver that cost 200, but they have a 512mb one for 150. Great quality player, awsome sound and its VERY small. Its slightly longer than a pack of gum in length. Also, the battery life is great. Runs on 1 AA battery and goes for 40 hours in ideal conditions. Cant complain about anything with this player. Hope this helps.

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
Yeah, thanks, I'll look into that one. And now that you mention the battery life thing, I heard that the iPod has a pretty nasty battery situation. If the built-in rechargible battery dies, you have to send it back to get it replaced and you can only do that if it's still in its one-year warranty or whatever. I hate stupid things like that that ruin something that is otherwise very nice.

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
Yea i feel you. I'm waiting for either a decent competitor (there's a creative one thats not bad, just not up to par quite yet) or for Apple to fix the battery issue and drop the price a few bucks. They make a rediculous amount of profit on each one of those sold.

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
If you seriously want to talk cost for the iPod, then consider my justification for throwing out my hard earned cash for jumping from my 2nd generation 20 gig iPod to a 60 gig iPod Photo:
I use the living shit out of my iPod!
I have speakers on my bathroom sink for listening to iPod in the shower. I have adapters to go through my stereo in my car and take them with me on the road when I have rental cars. I travel a lot, so I have it with me on airplanes (try a 20 hour flight to Singapore without music. Not me.). I plug into iTunes at work and listen to my iPod at my desk.
Yes I am a music fanatic.
Now figure the number of days I use my iPod (everyday = 365 days/year). I had my first iPod for 2 years before I upgraded. Figure I use my iPod photo for 2 years and I bought it for $499 (I know, just before the price was cut $50). That means 730 days divided by $499 and my iPod costs me $1.49 per day. For the amount I use it, I would say that that is definitely worth the investment.
I have 35 gigs of music currently pumping on it BTW.

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
sorry not to sure what a EQ is the sound quality is ok but then sound quality is ok with the standard speakers but then u could always upgrade the headphones for better qulality. it is a lot cheaper my ipod was £209 of 20gb and my friends zen was £130 for 30gb off ebay brand new. its heavier and thicker than the ipod. looks wise for me anyway the ipod is far supieror.

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
I have an iriver - the battery life is brilliant, the sound quality is great, and yes it has a built in eq. Its a bit bulkier then the ipod (i have and old build - black screen instead of the sexy colour screens they have now). Features on top of that is a voice recorder and plays a massive range of music formats. Also the majority of the accessories come in the box

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
Hey, yamonster, how long does the battery last if you use it as much as you do? I mean the overall battery, not each charge. Did you get the 60GB photo because your first one died?

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
I think there's definately something that hasn't been brought up... the UI of iPod. I've never heavily used an iRiver or any of the other competitors, but from what i've heard, the iPod UI is so much more intuitive and useful.
But you do pay for the design and the UI... without getting the greatest battery ever. You can buy a aftermarket replacement battery for like $30, install it yourself in 15 minutes, and have a better battery than the stock one. I recently did this with my 3rd-gen 20gig, and I love it!. :happycow:

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
Where can you buy an aftermarket battery? I didn't really see anything like that on their website, only external battery packs and stuff like that.

Re: iPod vs Other Mp3 Players
Sorry Adolf, haven't been online for a while.
Battery is amazingly long. Especially compared to my 2nd Gen (which was shit). I think since the expose and focus on the poor quality of the earlier model's battery, Apple really stepped it up on the later models.
I get coast to coast with quite a bit of juice left for the rental car (which you could buy Monster's FM tuner which charges at the same time).
Also, there are no after market battery packs that I've seen.
