Re: Enlisting into the Military
Yes we're at war. Yes you've gotta be willing to fight. But you don't have to beleive in everything Bush supports. I certainly don't buy Bush's line on everything (we're there for oil, plain and simple, but good things are happening too). I served under Clinton and didn't buy everything he had to say either.
The thing is, anyone who joins the military, enlisted or officer, has to recognize that they are potentially putting themselves in harm's way. It's not a day camp or job corps. As FastCar pointed out, you should recognize your motivation and decide if it's worth it. All I wanted was a job and a ticket out of Podunk, I found alot more. That's life.

Re: Enlisting into the Military
I also have been pondering the idea of joining the military. I recently graduated college a year ago and have a very good job as a software developer but its really not doing it for me. Sitting in a cube 8+ hours a day has already gotten borring. I really have very little attachment to where I am living currently. Girlfriend and I are no longer together and majority of friends have moved away since college. I have read a little bit about officers training or something for people that already have gone thru college. Any suggestion?

If you have a degree... you would be going to OCS... Office Candidate School. Very intense, but very rewarding. Look into it and educate yourself. Being an officer has great benefits.

Re: Enlisting into the Military
ya the airforce takes good care of their people, but it is hard to advance.
If i was you i would join the coast guard. They are probably the 2nd best military branch in terms of taking care of their people. But it has alot faster advancements. Oh also i would go to the acadamy and become an officer...you'll start your career making as my as a 15 year employee who went in enlisted

Re: Enlisting into the Military
I sereved 4 years in the Army during Desert Storm and loved it. It wasn't something I wanted to make career out of but had a great time and made alot of friends that I still keep in touch with. Make sure that you get everything you want to do in your contract. For example, if you want to go Airborne then sign up for it at the MEPS. In the Army the chances of you getting something like that are slim unless your unit is an airbourne unit.
You need to ask yourself why you want to do it. College money? Just to serve? Nothing else to do? Whatever it is, don't make a rash decision. Weigh your options and don't let the recriuter pressure you. Good Luck.

Re: Enlisting into the Military
Well first off Id like to say congratulations for any of the people that decides to serve his/her country. I joined the Army Reserves Dec 1 1997. I was activated on Sept 11 2001. Ive been voluntarily extending. I am preparing a warrant officer package which if you are thinking about the Army I would strongly encourage you to look into this field. Like others have said about OCS, the Warrant Field gives you the opportunity to do the job you signed up for, and not have to deal with any of the other bullshit. Like OCS WOCS is extremely challenging, but definitely seems worth it to me.

Re: Enlisting into the Military
Signed up for a few years back in the early 90's, into the Irish army. Even though i spent most of my time on border patrol in the north ( not nice ), i still found it stood to me in the end. For anyone thinking of signing up for their countrys military, of course theres a risk - especially for those involved with the war on terror - but i think the benifits outweigh the bad. Just my two cents worth...Oglaigh nah eireann

Re: Enlisting into the Military
Being a current active duty Marine, my comments will be short... do it for yourself, to improve, to be part of something bigger than yourself. There will be people you will work for who you don't like, but most of the time you can respect based on their experiences. You will gain friends more like brothers you will have for life. My best piece of advice is if you decide to do it, commit yourself fully. If at the end of your enlistment, you decide it's not for you, great, seperate honorably. You still will have gained from your experience.

Don't enlist, your life will be exponentially better if you're an officer.

Re: Enlisting into the Military
If you enlist, what ever branch of service, Get a gaurenteed A school. Don't just sign up hopeing to get a school, have it in the contract. Depending on what type of job and training you want further down the road, this is a good start.
The Air force has some of the best technical training there is, they do have nice quarter's, and chow is the best.
Navy has lots of great jobs and really takes care of the sailors. Travel is far better then any of the other's and most jobs are not in the line of fire. Shipboard life is a lot different then home, but has great benifits.
The Marines are some of the toughest SOB's out there, they are physically fit, hard working hard charging and stick together like ducktape on your ass. They may be up front alot, but they look out for each other.
The Army is a large force and has some good and some bad. I know some folks that where Army, and they are good people. Smart too. But you will be in the front.
All have different jobs and different places in the world to be stationed.
I have been around the world, and lived in places I only dreamed of as a kid.
24 years+ between Active and reserve - 1 year recall to Washington State, and Six months recall to Bahrain in the gulf (For the war).
Damn gald I did it.
If you do go officer, just remember - the E-7's and up know more then you do. treat them with total respect, they will teach you the job.
Good luck.

Re: Enlisting into the Military
Last I heard (a few months ago) the Air Force wasn't taking prior service. As you know, things change all the time.
