Re: Nuggets Rule!!!

yep. long read.

Jackson Remains A Top Candidate In Coaching Search

Press Enterprise: Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak held season-ending exit meetings with his players Thursday, but what everyone wanted to know during his news conference was whether Phil Jackson would return to coach the team.

Kupchak said Jackson is at the top of their wish list, and he thinks Jackson is interested in the job.

Jackson met with Lakers owner Jerry Buss on April 13 about the job, but no decision was reached.

Jackson attended a Lakers game April 7 at Staples Center and sat in Buss’ box. He has been at the Lakers’ El Segundo office recently and met with Kupchak while there.

Kupchak said Jackson gave the team no indication of what he wants to do.

“Phil is a viable candidate, correct,” Kupchak said. “I don’t think that is a secret. He has spoken to us. We’ve met with him on occasion. He was in our building a couple of times in the past two or three weeks.

“In fact, I was at my desk a week ago, and he came in and sat down, and we talked for about 45 minutes. The job has not been offered to anybody. At this point in time, I would characterize our relationship with Phil as casual, and the interest or the possibility remains that he would be a coach with this team.”

Rudy Tomjanovich was hired last summer after Buss decided not to bring Jackson back.

Frank Hamblen took over as interim coach after Tomjanovich stepped down Feb. 2 for health reasons.

Lakers assistant coaches Larry Smith, Mike Wells, Melvin Hunt and Chris Bodaken, all of whom were hired by Tomjanovich, were let go Thursday.

Kupchak was asked if Jackson expressed interest in coming back.

“The fact that he’s in our building, attending games with our owner in his box, he stopped by to say hello to me; I think that indicates that there is some interest,” Kupchak said. “What level of interest, I really don’t know.”

Kupchak said the organization wants to hire a coach before the June 28 NBA Draft, preferably well before then. He said he has a list of three or four candidates.

Names like Larry Brown and Pat Riley have been tossed around. Brown is in the second-year of a six-year deal that pays him $6 million annually with Detroit. Still, he is known for leaving jobs on a lark, he has a home in Malibu and his wife is from Southern California. Riley will become fully invested after this season with Miami and will get 10 percent ownership of the Heat.

Kupchak said Jackson likes the group of players the Lakers have.

Jackson wrote a tell-all book about the 2003-04 season in which he characterized Kobe Bryant as difficult to coach. Jackson wrote that he asked Kupchak to trade Bryant.

Kupchak was asked if the Lakers would seek Bryant’s opinion before hiring Jackson.

“We won’t ask Kobe who he likes and who he doesn’t like,” Kupchak said. “We didn’t do it last year.”

Kupchak was asked what he thinks about Jackson after meeting recently with the former Lakers coach.

“I think he wants to coach,” Kupchak said. “I think he’s intrigued with the idea. I’m not sure he’s challenged physically and mentally enough, or rejuiced or reenergized at this time. Maybe that’s something that will change in a couple of weeks or a month. I’m not quite sure, but I don’t think his coaching days are over.

“I think he sees himself as a coach. So I don’t think his days are over. Yet today, if you talked to Phil and said: ‘Phil, are you ready to coach today?’ I’m not quite sure what he would say.”

Kupchak was asked if Jackson was the team’s first choice.

“We haven’t made a list and ranked them,” Kupchak said. “Certainly he’s at the top of the list.”

Jackson earned $6 million a year in his five years with the Lakers.

When contract negotiations broke down between Jackson and Buss in February 2004, Jackson reportedly wanted about $10 million per year.

Kupchak was asked if that could be a sticking point this time.

“We’ve never lost a coach because of dollars,” Kupchak said. “So I don’t think that would be an issue. Dr. Buss recognizes what it costs to bring great players, great coaches to Los Angeles. So I don’t think that would be any part of any decision.”

People everywhere hate Kobe. The man can't stand sharing, he has a butterfly tattooed on his arm, and he tried to get street cred by spunking on some skank's grill
