Re: what were the best NES games?
Dragon Warrior 1-4
and about that Final Fantasy; if you're into the emulators get yourself copies of the real part 2 and 3-they originally came out on the NES, but only in Japan; our 2 and 3 are Japan's 4 and 6. We missed out on 2,3 and 5. The ROM community translated them. I'd give you the link, but I'm not allowed. PM me and we'll talk.
River City Ransom
Can't mention River City without giving props to:
Crash and the Boys Street Challenge
World Cup Soccer
Super Spike V Ball
and
Double Dragon 2 (the best Double Dragon, hands down)
Faxanadu kicked much ass, in fact, after I'm done posting this, I'm going back to a game of Faxanadu that I've been playing off an on for the past week or so.
Excitebike (What? It was my first game.)
Shadowgate
Tecmo Super Bowl
Bump n' Jump
City Connection
Rygar
Gyruss
Contra
Super C
Double Dribble (those dunk animations kicked ass back then!)
Ice Hockey
Ice Climber
Codename: Viper
Metal Gear
Snake's Revenge
Zelda and
Zelda 2 (I liked 2 better, but I'm wierd like that)
Battle of Olympus
Immortal
Tetris
Dr. Mario
Basewars
Bases Loaded 1,2, and 3
I'm losing my memory, which means I'm about out of favorite NES games.

Re: what were the best NES games?
Faxanadu has not been mentioned nearly enough!
Shadow Gate - anybody remember Shadow Gate? it was a game of riddles. I had a serious love/hate relationship with that game; it was the only game I ever had to call the Nintendo hotline for!
What was that game called - it started with S... had a wizard/sorcerer on the cover... hmm..
And that game with the penguins and the iceblocks.
