ADSL Modem for Wi-Fi use

click on one of our sponsors! OR REMOVE ADS
Not sure if this is the right place to post but WR is the ONLY place for me so here goes.

I intend to go broadband in my home PC. The service provider is the same who has provided the regular telephone to us. He will give us a 256 KBPS connection over the telephone line using a standard ADSL Modem. I have the choice of buying the modem outright (for about $45) or to add around $2.5 to monthly charges of about $12).

Now the question - I have this new laptop (IBM T42) which like most new ones supports Wi-Fi. How do I use Lap top in home to access the Internet over Wi-Fi via my Home PC (Which is an old horse having no support for Wi-Fi, it has an USB port and of course a TCP/IP card)??

I did some research and looks like I will need somekind of Wireless Router/ Switch to be connected after the Modem and connect the PC over USB/T1 lan and the lap top over Wi-Fi. Is this approach correct or what?

Also I need some idea (links to web sites will also be great) about the specs and price of the equipment in US that I need to make this whole thing work. (I have some colleague going to US who can get this stuff)

Get a router, like one from Linksys or Netgear, that is also a wifi access point
Just be sure to read the manual completely to learn how to secure the wifi access so that someone outside of your control can't get access.

Re: ADSL Modem for Wi-Fi use

Thanks for the reply......however there is this one thing that I need to ask. Is there something on these product lines which connect to ADSL modem over USB and not via TCP/IP (this is for a friend of mine whose ADSL moden just has a USB output and his Desktop PC too doesn't has a TCP/IP Card but his laptop does have Wi-Fi)

Re: ADSL Modem for Wi-Fi use

Trust me when I say it'll be better for him, and he'll see better speeds, if he just goes out and picks up an ethernet card. They are damn cheap.

Here is a list of them from newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...property&DEPA=0
The cheapest they list is $5+$3.99 shipping ($8.99), but he should be able to head down to a local computer store and get one for the same price (and I don't mean BestBuy)
CompUSA has one for $8.86 http://www.compusa.com/products/pro...3697&pfp=BROWSE
They also have a D-Link 5pack for $30. Use one and sell the rest for $5-10 each and make his money back or close enough.

Trust me on this. Using the USB is a bad idea. I've not heard from people using cable and dsl modem connected with USB that they either end up having to reinstall the USB drivers every few months/weeks/days or even everytime they shutdown or restart.
Plus I've also proven with a number them that switched to the ethernet card that they do in fact get much better speeds.

If his modem is strictly USB, tell him to call the ISP and ask for a replacment that supports ethernet.....if possible even demand one that does.
I don't care what anyone says about USB being 12mbps, it's only one-way...plus the cable/dsl modem are only 10mbps anyway and the ISP is only putting out 1-5mbps (as the case may be) so it still doesn't matter if USB is 12mbps. It just wasn't designed for hardcore networking, however it is nice for quick, short and dirty networking between 2 machines.

Re: ADSL Modem for Wi-Fi use

Yes, you need a router that connects to your pc with the ADSL and you will connect to the internet/home network through the wireless connection and the other pc. Also XP does alot of this for you and on a side note when I setup my wireless save yourself the frustration and pitch the crappy 6 step setup poster most will include and go to PDF file on the cd and look for the setup (*^& motorola). Good luck man.
