I would really like to see Obama run. I was watching him again today, and I don't care whether you're Dem or Rep, you should check out what he has to day. He's fucking smart, and has great plans. I really want him to run.

haha, a while ago, I remember something I saw for a Fox show called "American Candidate" which was gonna be run like any Reality Show, with people getting voted out until the last guy remained, who would then run for president. Maybe I saw it out of context and it was a joke... but it was sadly believable.

I always wonder what would happen if a major pop figure who had some sort of political clue ran as an independant. I mean, Ah-nold got in as Governator.... what if Brad Pitt, Jennifer Garner, or Matt Damon ran for president... if they at least gave off some sort of idea that they had a clue what was going on, how many people would be stupid enough to actually vote that direction? What if a famous actor got a party nomination?

It matters b/c half the country are rural hicks and uneducated. I voted for Bush, and like him, but I know if you took out all the white rednecks he would never have won. Regardless of how politically correct people would like you to believe we’ve all become there is a large portion of the population who would never vote for a black, Jew or woman for president.

Since the US pres can do more good or harm than any other person on the planet, this thread interests me a lot. Some comments from a "safe" distance.

Obama is clever and bold (and black). Very inexperienced, but an inspiring speaker. Might be a good running mate. Or are the rednecks unable to stomach even that?

Hilary is clever and experienced (and female), and maybe a bit schoolmarm. Reminds me a bit of Margaret Thatcher, a very scary thought. Being Bill's right-hand woman (more than just 1st lady, although not his lover) means she has more real presidential experience than anyone else likely to run. Clever enough to move her politics more central than when Bill had the job, she knows the USA is not the same since 9/11.

Rudy is personable and politically lucky. 9/11 happened in his backyard, nobody much had heard of him before that. He did a good job as mayor after that horror, but you'd hope so would whoever was in charge. It made him world-famous, he never missed a photo-op in his NYFD cap. No real experience of national or international politics.

Jed is clever and likeable, seems well respected in Florida. No national or international experience. Another Bush for pres?

Colin is impressive, but surely has missed his chance. Shame, plenty of military and international political experience. He was the one cabinet minister who advised caution over invading Iraq, his military experience of actual war (Vietnam and Gulf) made him more aware of the risks and consequences than the desk-jockeys who prevailed.

Arnold is clever and very personable. But he probably won't get the constitutional chance, and his CA popularity is fading. A shame, his ideas and policies seem pretty sound. No real experience, but also no political baggage. Why not another from the Reagan tradition?

Condoleezza? Very clever, personable and hawkish. Plenty of top-level political experience. But black and female! Too many strikes against?

Nobody else on the horizon just yet, at least not visible outside the USA! But a lot can change in 3 years...

While it's true that Reagan was at one point an actor, he wasn't really a celebrity candidate, by the time he was President his acting days were long behind him and he was never very big in his day anyway. Has anyone here actually seen a movie that he starred in? If you want a true celebrity who got into the presidency because of it you have to look past the Hollywood days to US Grant. After the Civil war he was the Brad Pitt of the 1800s. Teddy Roosevelt was similar (but a MUCH better president) but initially he was not actually elected, he simply rose to the position from vice president.

Today though I don't think we'll see anything like that. Celebrities can give speeches, but they've got such a reputation for being dumb (well deserved might add) that they have very little credibility with the voting public as political minds.

Obama is too young and needs to go around the world block a few more times. Rudy Juliani.... well... carries excess baggage with his affair and all, likes to mug for T.V. camaras and has very little international experience.
My vote goes to John McCain with The Body Jesse Ventura as his running mate.
I do not think this country is ready or mature enough to have a female or a minority as president.
