Backing Up Games??
I just bought a shitload of games and it cost a pretty penny...so i wan't to protect my "investment" and back up the cdroms...what and how is the best way to do this? A kid I knew in college that lived down the hall from me last year would rip them (with some software I don't know or have) to an .iso file to his computer then burn it with nero. What program could do this for me? Is there a program that will autimatically backup the game for me. I heard about Game X-Copy or whatever, I don't know how well it works or where to get it. I think that company went out of business or something. My friend would also like to know how to do this, because he just spent a $450 on software. It's a flight simulator for model airplanes, very realistic. Him and his dad are into that and wanted to practice on the computer at home instead of crashing their planes which is like $200 a pop...Any help would be appreciated..thanks

Re: Backing Up Games??
There are 2 things, besides burning software that you'll need.
Alcohol 120% and this web site
Each game uses a different type of copy protection and that site will list which one they use so that when use the Image Making Wizard in A120 you'll know which one to set it to.
Now you can also use A120 to burn the ISOs as well, but yes Nero can do it.
A120 can also be used to make virtual drives so you can mount the images you made, but personally for this I prefer DaemonTools (let me know if you want a link for that).
Mounting your game images will give you faster load times, from Windows desktop to game desktop, plus it'll save your disc and CD/DVD drive from excessive use.
It's not totally automatic. But once you get past which copy protection to use it's pretty much straight forward. I don't think Game X-Copy was all that automatic either, but then I've never used it.
Game X-Copy I believe was from the same people that made DVD X-Copy who got sued out of business, which was such bullshit.
Now it might be possible to still find it on some warez sites or Kazaa and so on, but then you have to worry if you trust the source. Plus with newer and newer copy protection formats and updates to the ones that exist already, there won't be any updates for GXC to support them.
I did find this X-Copy Pro which you can try and see if that works for you.
A120% and that copy protection site I listed before, I've never had a problem. If your game isn't listed, then it has no copy protection and in which case I just use SafeDisc 2/3 just for grins and make the ISO.
NOTE: with A120 and using some protection formats will limit which file type it'll save the image as, but no worries A120 and Nero can burn them all with no problem.

Re: Backing Up Games??
regarding backing up PS2 and XBOX games...
in order for one to backup these games, you need two things: a DVD burner (plus software) and a Modded Console.
there are few advantages to modding, which if you are only a basic gamer, should not do. When you mod, for example, your XBOX, you cannot play on XBOX Live, which is a HUGE disadvantage. And how many games are there that are that great. You have HALO2, and, umm... did I say Halo 2? Well anyway, if you don't even know how to backup PC games, console games are WAYYY out of your league, but thats not a bad thing. I personally chose not to mod my XBOX. Its just not really worth it in the long run.

Re: Backing Up Games??
Personally, I use no cd hacks and put the discs up in the closet once I install them.

Re: Backing Up Games??
^^ : : ^^
I don't know it seems like more and more games don't require the cd to play anymore. Maybe its just me, but I install them and then put the cd back in the box.
I'm also a big fan of Steam from Valve. It seems like I'm the only one, but even if I were to lose/break my cd, I can just download the software again. Everything's linked to my account so I can even lose the cd-key. My only complaint is I want to change the e-mail address its linked to because I don't use that e-mail anymore.

Re: Backing Up Games??
no-cd cracks are good to a point, that is when the maker stops making updates for it and there is no online play or need to play it online.
A no-cd crack for a game like GTA3&VC or SplinterCell 1 are just fine since there is no online play at all (well ok GTA3&VC have MTA but it wasn't made by R*).
But for something like BF1942 or BFV the no-cd crack will let you play just fine as long as it's solo and LAN play, but online you're can't.
This is where ISOs and programs like DaemonTools comes in, the only down side is that you're limited to the number of virutal drives the program can provide plus the ISOs can take up a lot of room, but I have seen some people come up with mini-images that are only about 100k-30megs (it varies) and those usually work. The best upside is that the game load time is cut well in half and many games to CD checks between map changes (BF42 and BFV I know for sure) which cuts that time out completely, plus doing updates isn't an issue at all.
I do miss the days of UT, Quake2 and 3 when they Epic and ID got to a point in the updates where they gave you the means to not have to load the CD any more. Well I know Q2&3 did, now I forget if UT was that way or not but I do remember making a simple small mini-image (about 100-200k) that worked.
