What type of men/women do you think are most successful in relationships? Ones that can form little or no attachment, stay light-hearted and flexible or ones that bog you down with emotional bullshit ? Who , in your opinion, is happier?

i think maybe its like this

if you make a relationship unemotional, and dont invest any emotion in it - then you dont have all the baggage and you can maintain the 'lighthearted' feel

but, i personally feel that the emotional rewards of having a deep, meaningfull felationship, are basically the whole reason for being involved in the first place. if you arent willing to invest some of yourself in it, then whats the point?

im biassed, no doubt
but it just seems to me that witout a healthy dose of emotion then why are you in a relationship? as a placebo for loneliness? just for the sex? to fool yourself into thinking life isnt meaningless?

Ah yes, emotion.. friend or foe?
I agree that you do need SOME emotion in any relationship. There has to be some kind of connection other than just a friendship, otherwise your basically just friends with benefits. Although, this setting too, comes with its advantages. I guess it just varies. The investment of emotion is not what's up for debate really.. its how much. When the person you are involved in becomes so tightly wound around you, that it borders on obsession.. what good is it then? Then you meet and become good friends with Rock and Hard Place.. because what if you no longer share those feelings for that person, or you have feelings but not to the same intensity but know that they NEED you. I'm not one of those people who believe you can "grow to love someone" over time, that's like saying.. "well, we could be blown up tommorrow." hoping and wishing on something that isn't there what could or might be, is what I find ALOT of people who are in extremely emotional relationships face. Often, its sooo lopsided. It can all be a very sordid process. Then again, I suppose if it weren't sordid we wouldn't appreciate the one who makes us whole when we find them.

I think you can grow in love with someone over time... be open and honest with eachother and discuss your emotions... that will keep the table clear and keep you out of that rock and hard place. It's all about the communication and having a clear understanding of whats happening.
