WinME Startup Problem
Hello boys and girls. My home computer won't start up properly, I obviously need help. Thank god for work PC's so I can post this! Hehe.
Ok, so I turn on the PC, everything's fine until it starts to load the run-in-background programs that sit on the system tray. It gives me the Blue Screen of Death, an error has occured, blah-blah, and the code thing at the bottom says "0D: 000 0001000" (Is that even relevant?) Yeah, like I know what that's supposed to mean. I've restarted in safe mode and tried removing some of the programs that load on startup, (still doesn't work when I'm not on safe mode, though) however I haven't removed all of them because I had to go to work. The only thing I did yesterday was install one of those critical service update thingamajigs from Microsoft, dunno if that's what messed it up, as it worked fine last night.
So, anyhow, I've found this thing [LINKY-LINKY!] on the Microsoft site, I'd have to try it out once I get back home. Please help if you can. Thanks!

Re: WinME Startup Problem
Can you start up in Safe Mode without any problems?
If so, and if youre smart enough to already have Ad-aware and Spybot downloaded and install, start up in Safe Mode and run both followed by the anti-virus I'm also hoping you're smart enough to have, and see what cleaned out.
Then restart and see how it acts when starting normally

Re: WinME Startup Problem
Yep, I can start up in safe mode without any problems. Yup I have an updated anti-virus software, and yup I have ad-aware. Will do all those later when I get home. Thanks

Re: WinME Startup Problem
if running the adware programs doesnt work, im pretty sure that ME has system restore( basically a program in windows that allows you to go back to a different dates and restore all system settings to that point). Go to program files->accesories->system tools-> System restore( thats how it is in XP, ill check on ME computer later). you should be able to click restore to a point, and hopefully there are points in time that you can restore too. this should solve your problem unless something deeper is screwed up. ill update this post in a bit with ME stuff if its different.

Re: WinME Startup Problem
Well, it looks like I've found the culprit: The lates Win ME service update thingamajig that I installed last night. Removed it when I went into safe mode, and the normal boot went ok... so I'm back online.
Thank you everyone.

I know u said you fixed it, but just a few pointers mate
1) Windows ME that is the first problem - now i'm not starting a flame war, nor will i go into details - the problem with win ME is well documented and as long as my arm
2) Not accusing of pirated software (ie: some OEM is very dodgy even tho they are legit) but microsoft is beginning to crack down on updates and non legit software - again well documented just a simple google
3) Updates sometimes work sometimes they dont. XP SP2 i installed on one computer, othercomputer it crashed and burned - before you update make sure you have back up of critical files and have a restore point - that will seriously stop any pain that you may experience
Glad you fixed it mate

Yeah ME sucks. I'd get another OS, Win 2000pro or XP, if you can. You'll be much happier with either of those. Hell I'd rather have 98 than ME.

Re: WinME Startup Problem
You should definitely move to WinXP if you can afford it. Dell has tons of cheap computers you can buy for like $400 that come with a 17" LCD and everything. Make the switch, you'll love it.

Re: WinME Startup Problem
Your problem is that you're running ME. This is definitely the worst and most unstable operating system that the world has ever seen. You'd be better off with Windows 3.11.
