wow Google!

holy shit, this is a bit creepy but just fucking...crazy. (PS: I suggest if anyone wants a g-mail account they should use google as randomly as possible and keep an eye out for a link right below the serch field before u type it in, I think they're giving htem out for a few days)
so today is my lucky day for various reasons, but one of them is that I got a g-mail account! I was on a public computer about to go to google news to do a quick search for something, when my mind said, wahts that? I clicked back and saw right below the search field it said soemthing about g-mail, and I was like, oh cool they finally released it to public? So I click on it; nope, its still beta. but they invited me to join them! so I was like, fuck yeah, and now have an account, wahoo, kciks hotmail ass anyday

so just now, I rented out a public laptop, I see the same link on google, and I'm like, sweet maybe I can get one for my frined....I click on it, and despite the fact I did not sign into g-mail with that comp, it KNEW WHO I WAS.

so basically, I was on two different computers with different IP addresses, and google fucking KNEW WHO I WAS!!!! I suspect it's b/c I was signed in to my other e-mail account and google read the cookie, but still, I must hand it to google they got their shit together. wow

Re: wow Google!

that website is a bit overblown. Google is jsut a company and they're doing a damn good job. Though I find a lot of big corporations really evil, I'm making a rare exception for Google b/c they are seriously just kicking ass. Their advertisments are highly unoticable and very small, as opposed to shitmail (hotmail) which is big and even loads slow no matter how fast your connection.

Re: wow Google!

After you sign up, they give them to you.
At first it was 6, I gave out a few, then they replaced them, then I gave out some more, and they replaced them too. This went on for a while, and now all of a sudden, I had 50 to give away. I think everyone get's invites that they can give out.

Re: wow Google!

What probably happened is that you were behind a NAT'd firewall. This happens to me once in a while on my college campus. If you want I can explain how it works, or I can leave it at "that is fairly common".

enlighten me as to waht NAT is short for. Though I pretty much undertand why the college cmapu sthing messes things up, thats pretty straitfoward.

Re: wow Google!

nat = "network address translation"

usually it means the computers inside the firewall have IP addresses like 192.168.xxx.xxx, and they are not valid outside the firewall (the firewall translates the addresses into 'real' addresses for the use on the public internet). I'm simplifying a lot, but you get the idea.

Re: wow Google!

I've got 3 accounts myself and each has 50 invites to give out... so that means I could give gmail invites to 150 people, if anybody wants it.
