Coaching Possibilities: Phil In The Blank?
NY Times: Tomjanovich, who won championships in Houston in 1994 and 1995, took off the 2003-4 season to recover from cancer treatments. He signed a five-year contract with the Lakers in July, after the team decided to part ways with Phil Jackson.
Tomjanovich’s sudden departure, which caught friends and team officials off guard, could potentially open the door for Jackson’s return.
Friends have said the Knicks are Jackson’s top choice if he decides to return to coaching after this season. But two friends of Jackson’s said Tuesday that he would be intrigued by coaching the Lakers again, despite the ill feelings of his exit last summer.
Jackson still has supporters in the Lakers’ front office, and one of his longtime assistant coaches, Frank Hamblen, is serving as the head coach in Tomjanovich’s absence. Hamblen was the only member of Jackson’s staff to be retained.
“Of course he would listen,” said Jackson’s agent, Todd Musburger, referring to both the Lakers and Knicks jobs. “But right now, he’s enjoying a vacation. And when he returns, he’ll sit down and evaluate all of his options.”
The Lakers have not made inquiries about Jackson’s interest.
The key person in a potential Jackson-Lakers reunion would be Bryant, the Lakers’ star guard. If Bryant wants Jackson, the Lakers probably would make the call, and Jackson would listen.
The Lakers, at Bryant’s request, installed some elements of Jackson’s triangle offense last month.
Bryant and Jackson tussled throughout their five years together, and Jackson twice tried to have him traded - including once last January, five months before the Lakers returned to the N.B.A. finals. But they aired out some of their differences in a postseason meeting at the Lakers’ training complex last June and parted amicably. Jackson was said to be pleased with the discussion.
Jackson, 59, owns a home in Playa Del Rey, Calif. He is on a motorcycle tour of New Zealand with his brother, Joe, and is not expected to return home until late this month. Jackson has steadfastly maintained that he would not coach this season and that he would evaluate his motivation for coaching this summer.
