The college life
As you may have guessed, I'm in college right now at the University of Iowa. I'm in my first year here, and the problem is I don't know what I'm doing here. I don't know what I'm going to major in, I'm not really good at anything and I failed a bunch of classes last semester. Now I'm on academic probation and if I don't pass all my classes this semester I'm outta here. The thing is I don't really have any motivation to be here. I want to get an education, but I don't know in what area. I feel like if I don't get a degree from somewhere, I'll be a failure. I just don't feel like sitting through four or more years of school after I've already been through 12. I guess what I'm asking is what should I do? Get a degree in something that will pay well and not be what I wanted to do? or drop out and do... well that's the problem, I don't know what I want to do. Thanks for taking the time to read this guys, any advice would be appreciated.

Re: The college life
I feel you man! That's why 2/3 of all freshman don't make it to their sophomore year. If you want to play it safe and cover all the bases, put a good effort into this semester and pass your classes. If you don't come back next semester, you might not come back at all or when you have a family to support. Get 'er done! This will buy time for you to figure out what you want to do. Whatever you decide to do, be sure it's something you love to do and will put 100% effort into it. I've got a degree in Chemistry and even wanted to teach, but by the time I left college I was deadset against teaching and didn't want to work in a lab with a whole bunch of carcinogens. Now I run a restaurant. I make a good living, and except for dealing with unmotivated dumbass people everyday I love what I do. I've even get a kick out of seeing people who work for me become successful. That's the icing on the cake! College will be a great life-shaping experience for you even if you don't use your diploma. Get 'er done!

Re: The college life
Concentrate on passing your classes and getting out of probation. Take a bunch of easy shit, like pottery, art, PE...anything to get your GPA back up. It takes some students YEARS before they realize what they want their major to be. I changed mine from Mech Engr to Civil Engr like 3 years into it after I realized it wasn't what I expected. Some time lost, but sanity retained. College is what you make of it. It's not just a place to party, its a place to polish yourself up and get a decent future.

I changed from criminal justice to CE after I got arrested for a fake ID at a bar. We're like brothers from other mothers, Juan!
Dude, Mr. ZeroSKtr56 sir, I'm going to tell you straight up that college life is WAY better than working life. There isn't a day that goes by where I don't wish that I could be a 21 year old student again. I guess if you don't have the head for it, you don't have the head for it. That's something you're going to have to soul search for. I will tell you that if you can stick it out, and find something that you like studying, it will be worth it to have a degree. Ask yourself what you LIKE to do. I mean if you like playing PS2, go into graphic design or computer science. If you like building things, go into engineering. If you like arguing with people, go to law school, if you like skateboarding, get a business degree so you are a little more educated about entrepreneurial decisions when you open your own skate shop. You really don't have to decide until you are about 2 years in for the most part. It will probably just take you an extra year to complete your degree. Talk with your parents, brothers or sisters if you have them...your friends too. I just wouldn't pass up the opportunity to get the degree if you have the resources. Just my honest opinion, guy.

Re: The college life
I agree with the other suggestions given here. School is important in not just getting a degree but transitioning into a working life. I would say the most important thing though is to find something you really like to do. You have 30-40 years of work ahead of you. Start thinking about what job you can wake up for everyday and take whatever schooling you need to do for that job. That is too much time to spend just to get a job that pays well. Good Luck!

Re: The college life
I'm in a bit of the same situation right now. The last couple semesters, I had a lot going on, and I let it get the best of me. Now i'm on academic probation, and I had to beg to even get a little money from Financial Aid. As far as not knowing what you want to do... I go back and forth in my major every day. Luckily, they're both bio based majors, but regardless, it still adds to the confusion. I think Juan, so far, had the best advice in just taking classes that you'll excel in easily. I'm retaking a class right now, and even though it's the same class, it's a million times better. Look into what professors are teaching, and ask people about them. People will tell you who is a good professor, and who sucks, and that could make the difference between an A and an F.

Re: The college life
When you major, major in something that's more broad-spectrum. Right now, I'm Bio-Medical Sciences. That could be any number of majors inside the overall major. I'm pre professional. I waver between Pre-Vet and Pre-Med. It could also include say... chemists, biologists, zoology, or any number of other majors.

Re: The college life
I've got the answer for you on the professors: go to www.pickaprof.com and see if your school is there. I've used it for almost 2 years now. Now as for the GPA, I've taken all my easy crap already.
Advantage: High GPA .................Disadvantage: 2+ years of nothing but core engineering courses.
But look at it this way, if it gets too intense, just cut back and go part-time. There's no rule that you absolutely have to go full-time. And most of all, don't forget to relax and just hang out with your friends sometimes so you don't go crazy!

Re: The college life
alright, im in the same boat as you, right now as well. im in my first year of college and although im loving it, my major (i had to declare in my application) isn't appealing to me, yet nothing else is either. i've thought about maybe taking a quarter/semester off and working, just to see who i am. this might not be an option for financial reasons, but if at all possible, it might be something for you. whatever you decide, don't fully give up on college. maybe a break will help clear your head. anyway, hope this might help. i'll check back if you have any more concerns or whatnot. hope you (and i) figure out what we want in life. best of luck.

Re: The college life
im a senior in college and have lost many friends since freshman year. you will either watch that statistic roll past you or become part of it. its tough, but college isnt meant for everyone, but it does increase opportunity. freshman year is not meant to declare majhor, so do not worry about that, since your on probation take easy classes and get out of it and youll be fine. youll take a random class one day and it will make sense to you, then you will major in it. thats what happened for both of my majors. its all groovy, you have time, take advantage of it.

Re: The college life
I'm currently in my 4th semester at Minnesota and still don't know what I want to do. I'm thinking about taking the next semester off to work and think about school. You could try to take some time off and see if anything sparks an interest outside of school. You could be earning some money instead of "wasting" it by not working towards a particular goal.

Re: The college life
Just as Demerum I have seen many friends come and go into and out of my life. I am only a sophmore and have wanted to be in business all of my life. I think the best advice i give is to pick something you think you will like and give it a try. Get an internship or a job that will give you basic insight into your career. I thought for the longest time that I wanted to work with computers until i worked with a local company that showed me even the simplest problems never have an easy answer. Computers are still trial and error even when you know a lot of information on them. To this day i can still fix most problems but it usually takes about five tries. Personally I dont want to go through life without a definite answer. I have also always been interested in business. I have always wanted to do some sort of business but have always wondered if i had the drive to work for myself. This spring/summer i am finding out by running a College Pro Painter franchise. I think that experience will show you what you are interested in.
As other people have stated dont rush your decision. This is something you have to live with for a long time. Also dont do the get a degree for money thing. My dad has had to work for money rather than fun and hated it. Sure if you are completely money driven (most college students are) it might work for awhile but your priorities will change. If you are working for money you will become as fed up with your job as you are right now with college.
Dont worry so much about your major now... get your grades up and start thinking about it... so what if you have to stay in college for another year... when else can you party any night without adverse consequences... i have not heard of many bosses who brush off their employees who show up hungover
