Life decisions

I've heard it a million times. Pick something that you want to do and enjoy for the rest of your life and pick it while you can. Right now I'm obtaining a Computer Information Systems major at a college, but I'm bored with it. For the last two semesters I've been taking a LOT of general courses while I decide what I want to do.

So far I've wanted to major in CIS, Psychology, Criminal Justice, but now I've found something that I've always been interested in since I was little...drawing stuff. What I've found is A Bachelor of Science in Visual Effects & Motion Graphics. But the school I've found is rather far from home, and it would be a major pain in my ass to leave all my friends and family. The school is in Minneapolis, which is the biggest city I've ever been around, and I am very overwhelmed by it.

Perhaps you older ladies and gentlemen could help. What would you do? Make a major life change to follow a dream and take a chance surviving in a big city, or stick with Mayberry?

Re: Life decisions

lol... i guess when u said old ladies u meant me... thanks

1. While i see important to follow our dreams, sometimes they do not seem or are practical..

I said this in reference to going to Bachelor of Science in Visual Effects & Motion Graphics, i guess this involves more than just "drawing"..
a) would you consider yourself good at that? enough to make an honest living?
b) how would be the market in ten years for that career?
c) how competitve this career is?

I think the best way is if you write in a sheet the pros and cons on each profession, and see what offers the most advantages for you..

this is jsut an opinion, just make sure that whatever you choose yo stick into and do not back track... time goes only one way..

Re: Life decisions

HA! you sound like me...

Here I'm making over 80k a year doing Infrastructure Project Management, basically designing networks for the Federal Governement and doing Systems Integration. Great job, with a TS Security Clearance and all.. got the job as I left the US Marines.

Well.. I'm bored with it, and everyday I always think about being a cop and its my love. Most of my family is Law Enforcement, or FBI, or something. I'm about to leave an 80k job for a 40k job as a cop ONLY because thats what will make me happy.

So, I know EXACTLY where you are coming from. I'm 24, and I've already learned "it's not how much you make, its what you do"

Re: Life decisions

Right now I have it pretty much pounded into my head that I want to serve society...so I'm leaning towards Criminal Justice. Around here Hijacker, if you make 40k a year you're pretty well off.

Thanks for the answers everyone. And I didn't mean you Juana! I didn't say old...I said older...from you pictures you don't look much older than twenty-four...twenty-five.

Thanks again for the replies.

I just finished getting my degree in Digital Systems Technology. I have worked in the financial end of things up to going through the program. I have a great job now, I make good money and like you it is a decent amount for where I come from. That is just it though, I had to move away in order to make that much; because the job market was not that good in my home town when I graduated.

I miss the type of jobs I used to have. I enjoyed working with the public, I'm a people person. I did not expect to the job to be like it is. I gained alot of experience from the program, but looking back on it... I wish that I would have put more thought into it and gone through something else.

If you think that you would be truly happy doing the other, do not let moving away hold you back. You can always come home. Your friends and family will always be there. Moving away may just prove to be one of the best things for you, and you may just end up having to do it in the end anyhow. i really don't know if this helps, but this has been my experience. Good luck and make sure you do what will make you happiest.

Re: Life decisions

I agree that you need to do whatever makes you happy. You have too many years to work. If you are bored with the degree I cannot imagine you will find much more exitement in the job itself and you will have to wake up an go there everyday. Follow your dream. You will probably find it is not as hard to obtain as you believed. Also, I live in the Mpls area. It is a great area to live and go to school so don't be put off by the location. You will make friends here easily. Also, if being a cop is your thing they make about mid-$50's in the Twin Cities area since a 2-year degree is required. Good Luck!

Re: Life decisions

hey vivix it wasn't so long ago that i was in exactly the same boat as yourself... i was taking all kinds of different courses trying to decide what to do... my goals kept shifting into different areas as i discovered new areas of study and various job prospects. i ended up so damn confused about what i wanted (i have rather a lot of interests) that i didn't know what the hell to do. so i hung out in the mountains for a few months and snowboarded - for me i found it was much easier to evaluate my situation when i was removed from it. anyway to make a long story short i ended up as a paramedic, something i had never considered when i was at school. the point is maybe you should talk to a career counselor; there are all kinds jobs out there that you've never even heard of let alone considered as an option. also if there's something your interested in like the graphics thing talk to the school. ask them who hires the graduates from the program, contact some of the companies and see about job shadowing, then you can see for yourself what the job really entails; plus you can speak to people who do work in that field and see what they have to say. and don't be afraid to leave your friends and family for a few years - they will always be there. besides, you might really like minneapolis - you'll never know unless you check it out - and if you hate it it's only for a little while anyway and the benefits will hugely outweigh the shittiness. it's better to give something a shot and try it out than spend time later in life wondering how things would have turned out differently "if only..." anyway i can't remember who said it but "to conquer without risk is to triumph without glory" good luck.

Re: Life decisions

take it from a fellow artist, if you can, do. beleive me if art is that important to you, its best to take what training you can. yes have something to fall back onbut do what'll make you happy. id be in art college myself now, most likely, but i was a dumbass and didnt finish high school. as soon as i get my ged and get into an art college, or just a good college with a great art program, im going, even though that means i will be leaving my kids behind for awhile. without my art, i really do go crazy(er).

Re: Life decisions

go to art school if you want to. Minneapolis isn't that big and bad anyway, I know people that are going to the Arts Institute, which is what I think you're talking about. I go the Minneaplis campus of the U. of n everday. As long as you don't spend your whole day sitting around the street corners in downtown Minneaplis or St. Paul, or ride the bus a lot (like I do), you'll be fine here.

Re: Life decisions

If Minneapolis is the biggest city you've been to, then you DEFINITELY need to get out there.

Oh, and nobody ever knows what they want to do. You just kind of feel it out on a day to day basis.

Re: Life decisions

sticking around home sucks. I'm from a small town and leaving for college is the best thing ever. making new friends isn't too hard. just live in the dorms for a year or semester and be active in whatever neet things they do there. If your like me then youll be happier when your only obligation to your family is to talk to them every now and again. signifigant(sp?) others are the only reason that I didn't go farther away and honestly, I love her but I wish i would have broke it off before i came to college. I would have had a lot more exciting weekends and made more friends while being here. If you go, I don't think you will regret it. If you don't go you will always look back on it and if you don't really wish you did you will at least wonder what could have been.

Re: Life decisions

besides that, i heard a quote once that said something to the effect of "advice is what you ask for when you already know what to do but are to afraid to admit it". i think you know you want to go, you just want somebody to tell you to do it.

GO F***ING DO IT!!
