Re: is torture...
I think in some cases it could be justified. However, since torture is so terrible, I think it should never be used. It is to hard for someone to say that it is okay in one situation and not in another; it is more than can be asked of a man/woman to decide.

Re: is torture...
Torturing 1 or a few scum bags is WAY better than torturing a few hundred families with dead loved ones.
You wont win battles or defeat evil with kind words and handshakes, the sooner some people realize this the better the world will be.

Re: is torture...
Would i want to be tortured? no....therefore, in most cases, i would say no to others being tortured.
In the case that you presented, who is to say that he would even cave and tell you? A sick son of a bitch like that probably wouldn't be stopped by torture.
However, would smacking around a Charles Manson or two be fun? You betcha! Then again, i'm such a pansy i don't think i could slap him around....or maybe i could...
Bottom line is, look at what happened in Iraq with the torturing of prisoners...how much did we gain from that?? Maybe we did get a bit of information, but to do that to other humans, especially humans i had no proof were awful human beings, is just wrong.
Overall, i'd say, strike a deal....he'll probably only serve 10 years after parole, so what's a few more years knocked off for "cooperating" and providing "valuable information"? (or trick him and still fry him anyways....you get the last laugh and you didn't even have to knock him around a few times.)

Re: is torture...
It takes a strong person to have the stomach torturing someone to get information. Is it done all over the world? Yes. By our country? Yes.
Is it something I would want done to me? No. But what have I done that warrents it? Now if I knew of a planted bomb at a mall but didn't know what mall... I'd hope someone could torture the info out of someone in order to protect many.
1 person's rights <<< hundreds of innocent peoples deaths
when you add in the fact that the 1 person is guilty of planning the deaths of many... then torture is ok in my opinion.
^^ "Yes I believe he deserved to die, and I hope he burns in hell!" ^^

Re: is torture...
If you are Christian, Jewish, Buddhist,Hindhu or even Muslim(I think), there is no moral justification for torture. In that case torture is the pragmatic thing to do. You just have to work out the consequences later with your Maker.

Re: is torture...
In order to obtain information to save lives yes I would and I could live with myself for doing it. I think you have to remember why you have that person before you, it is not because they were jaywalking.
Look on the bright side at least if your "tortured" by our side (and I wouldn't call it that) you get to keep your head. You just get stripped naked and put in a pyramid.

Re: is torture...
Like davemo2us said 'put in a pyramid'. I mean ESPN shows cheerleading all the time. Is that torture? I think not. Now I would definitely tune in to see some naked college cheerleaders building a pyramid!!

Re: is torture...
It depends on the type of torture. Are we talking straight up physical beat down? I'm against it. It makes us look worse and their is the chance that it could quickly get overused and other cases where officers think it's necessary and go over the line. (in all honesty, many law enforcement agencies have relationship problems with the community and one physical beating of an innocent person would set law enforcement back twenty years)
However if the torture was non-evasive torture (such as sensory deprevation or overload) or if they used sodium-pentathol (sp?) in a situation like that I'd be more than all for it. Of course that's my oppinion I could be on crack.
