check the firewall and internet settings. if nothing there works, run a system restore and go from there.

Re: +++Help Computer Problem+++

Ack! No!
System Restore is the tool of the Devil!
I hope this warning doesn't catch you too late: if you haven't yet done so, use the Restore utility ONLY as a last resort, and ONLY if you don't particularly care about having to reformat your drive after the restore process goes horribly, disastrously awry and munges every bit of data on your platters.
In five years of both personal and professional mishaps, I have never had a single. Good. Experience. With the MS System Restore utility.

Now, onward, to your actual dilemma.
If the applications such as Internet Explorer and MSN Messenger will open up normally, but simply won't let you online, check (as APOCALYPSE mentioned) that your firewall wasn't enabled. Normally I would warn against using MS anti-spy utilities anyway, as they're rather prone to making subtle behind-the-scenes changes which are simply "assumed" to be in your best interest, especially if you're running WinXP Service Pack 2.
Most times, they cause more inconveniences than they remedy.
Additionally, if you want to make extra-extra-Doublemint-sure that the firewall is off, open the Run command box and type "services.msc", then scroll down the list and disable the "Windows Firewall (ICF) and Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)" - don't forget to set it to "manual" instead of "automatic", or it'll just load back up when you reboot.

Lastly, open up a command prompt (probably by going through the Run function again, and typing "cmd"), and type in "netsh winsock reset", sans quotation marks. Sometimes MS anti-spy can actually mistake integral components of their own software for spyware/adware, and will disable them accordingly.
Retarded? Yes.
Bothersome? Oh, yes.
Unexpected? Not hardly.

Afte that, reboot your computer and see if you can get online.
Hopefully, that'll take care of your problem.

Re: +++Help Computer Problem+++

You know what? I'm daft. Totally, utterly stupid!
I just noticed in your post that you're running Windows 2000, whereas I had it in my head for some reason that you were running WinXP Service Pack 2.
Christ...that number two must have thrown me off. Talk about paying attention, huh?

Anyway, I apologize.
Obviously, you won't be able to tinker much with the firewall in 2000, considering that the directions I gave you are exclusive to the WinXP envrionment!
2000 does include a firewall, but it's much tougher to use than the XP counterpart (Although the XP version is far more useless. Go figure), and doesn't come activated by default, so odds are it's not even on.
Still, if you want to double-check, open up a command prompt and type "mmc".
That'll get you to the Management Console, from which you can check the firewall, like so:
1. Select "Console" from the options
2. Select "Add/Remove Snap-in"
3. Add
4. Select "IP Security Policy Management"
5. Add
6. Finish
7. Close
8. Click Ok

That'll give you the win2000 IPSec Firewall starting screen. From there:
1. Click on the "plus symbol" next to "IP Security Policies..." under the Console Root folder in the left-hand pane
2. Right-click on "IP Security Policies..." in the left-hand pane
3. Click "Manage IP Filter Lists and Filter Actions"
4. Click on the tab "Manage Filter Actions"
5. Make sure there's nothing in the list that has a "blicked" status by it. Ideally, there should be nothing in the list at all, if the firewall has never been set up before. If there is anything, highlight it and use the "Remove" button.

That is, of course, all assuming tht the 2000 firewall is even set up. Like I said, odds are is isn't, so you won't have to do much removing at all. If that's the case, consider this to have just been a totally precautionary double-check, and just close the Console without saving any settings; your firewall will stay off.

Also, the "netsh winsock reset" command is XP-exclusive, which is why you couldn't find it.
I apologize again.
For fixing winsock in 2000, it's a little more complicated, but still a good idea, so I recommend using two handy tools for this one (both files are small enough to fit on a single floppy together, so you can download them, then transfer them to the afflicted computer easily enough)

Winsock Fix
and
IE Fix

*sigh*
Hopefully out of all that information, you'll find something of value that will help remedy your problem. For the final time, I apologize for the misleading information in my last post; I didn't intend to waste your time with completely non-applicable information.
I'll get some sleep and check this thread tomorrow to see if anything has worked thus far.

Re: +++Help Computer Problem+++

Oh, and about NewDot. It's spyware - a browser hijacker, specifically.
Go to your Add/Remove programs menu in the Control Panel, and see if you can find "new.net" listed there. If you do, remove it and that should cure the problem (which, believe it or not, may well be contributing to your inability to get online! TRY THIS BEFORE YOU TRY ANYTHING IN MY PREVIOUS POST!).

If it's not in the Add/Remove menu, let me know.
There's a much more in-depth way to get rid of it via the registry, and you might have to do that.

EDIT:
Actually, if the Add/Remove doesn't cut it, just go here:
http://www.iamnotageek.com/a/400-p1.php
Man, am I glad I found that. It saves me a ton of typing, and saves you some time.

Hey, no problem.
I'm just glad you were able to get it back up and running after the friggin' tome of misinformation I fed you the first time. I can't apologize enough for wasting your time with all that...but hey, it works now, and that's what counts!
Good luck keeping that badboy virus and/or spyware free. :happycow:
