linksys noob...
I'm trying to hook up 2 computers to cable internet wirelessly. I installed the wireless router and then try to install the USB adapter and then click the web browser to see if it works, which it doesn't. Do I have to install the internet on the other computer or am I doing something wrong? Oh, and the router and the USB adapter are compatible.

Re: linksys noob...
without knowing the OS, model of usb adapter, model of router, 802.11b/a/g, I'm going to have to go with waldo on this one. Click the little computer thingies on the task bar down by the clock. See if there's an available wireless network for you to connect to. You may have to check the box that says to connect to it even though it's not secure (I'm going to assume by your question that you didn't secure it)

Re: linksys noob...
Assuming you have an ethernet jack in your laptop I would plug the laptop into the router first using a CAT5 cable to make certain everything is configured right. Once you have internet access via a CAT5 cable going from the router to your laptop unplug the cable and try and use it wirelessly.
Good Luck.

Re: linksys noob...
Its 2 desktop computers. The USB adapter is a WUSB54G wireless-G and the router is a WRT54G wireless-G. I'm running Windows XP. I installed both of them using the CDs that came with them and it said that it would work but it doesn't.

What do the lights on the front of your router tell you? Do they light up green showing that the router has made a connection to the internet? I have a Linksys router as well; different model, but I'm sure they are similar. I also have a Linksys wireless card for one of my laptops. Assuming the software is similar: There should be software running from Linksys on the desktop. Open it and look to see if it made a connection with the router and then also if it is showing connection to the internet.
If you are connected to the router, but don't get internet you should read the instructions that came with your router. They should give you an IP address that you type into your web browser which will connect you to the router to configure it. Perhaps something is not configured correctly. If you've got an ethernet jack on the PC I would seriously consider bringing it close to the router and connecting a CAT5 cable from the PC to the router. If you can get on the internet this way then you know the problem is with the wireless USB.

The lights are on for the internet and the computer. When I click on hte little computer thingies they show that they have been recieving data on both computers. Both computers reconize each other but I can't get the internet to work on the 2nd computer.

Re: linksys noob...
start>run> type "cmd"
in the new window that comes up, type "ipconfig"
this will tell you information on your connection. it should tell you an ip address? what is it? does it have a 'gateway' ip address listed? that gateway should be 192.168.1.1 (linksys default) or maybe something similar.
if it doesn't show an ip address, or if is says something about an 'autoconfig' address like 169.xxx.xxx.xxx then try typing "ipconfig /release" to release the connection, and when it comes back to a c:\> prompt, type "ipconfig /renew" to try to get it an ip address.
If that fails, verify that your computer is in fact getting an appropriate wireless signal. Right click on "my network places", and choose properties. Then right click on the wireless connection, and look at it's properties. See if the box is checked that says "let windows handle my wireless connection." If so, refresh the list of available connections to see if you actually see the router. If not, find out what program handles the wireless connection and read its manual to figure out how to view available wireless networks.
Take a screen shot of any screen you don't understand, and post it here. To take a screen shot, just hold the 'alt' key and hit 'prtscn' (the print screen key). Then go to mspaint and paste your screenshot into an image. Upload the image to any free site (click 'uploads' on Webrats) and then post it here. We can all look at what is going on and see what we can figure out.

Re: linksys noob...
Do I do all of this on the computer that is connected directly to the internet or the second computer? I have done the run:cmd thing already and it didn't work, but I'll try it again.

Re: linksys noob...
this should be done on the computer that is not working
for the record, neither computer should be directly connected to the internet... the internet should be connected to the router, and then the computer should be connected to the router... I hope you have it set up like that, otherwise, that's our problem

Your PC must also be set up for DHCP (dynamic IP addresses) and not a static IP address. It's doubtful it is set up for static, but to check that go into Control Panel and then Network Connections. Right Click on the "Local Area Connection" (there may be more than one) and click on Properties. Once in there check to make sure you have the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" checked. Double click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and make sure "Obtain an IP address automatically" is checked. If it's not, fill in that radio button and try restarting the computer.
DHCP allows your computer to request an IP address from the router. If, for some reason, there was a static (assigned) IP address it probably won't work with the router.
Have you tried calling Linksys's helpdesk? I know they are often not very helpful unless it's a simple stupid problem, but it could be a start.

Re: linksys noob...
I went in to control panel and went to advance, one of the options says "allow othe computers to cennect to the internet using this comp's connection." Is this what i'm supposed to select?, because when i do i don't have a connection on either comp.
