Need help choosing message board software

I need a new discussion forum program. But I'm a cheap bastard so I want one that's free (open source or torrent 'free'). Currently I use a cgi-bin based one from Cutecast, but it's really buggy and I'm tired of losing data and it's really getting s-l-o-w. One nice thing about Cutecast though was that there's a ton of add-ins for customizing the look and style.

I'd also like a low-hassle setup one. My website has plenty of space and bandwidth, and supports both CGI and MySql.

The forum is just a job related site - pretty boring stuff, but it does have about 500 registered users. I also want one where I can create private forums as well.

What kind does Webrats use? Can anyone else offer pros and cons on different ones? Thanks

Oh yea, one other thing: I do not want one of those boards where the bulk of it is hosted at a 3rd party site. I want full access and control from my domain area.

You could try IPB (http://invisionboard.com

You have to purchase licensing, but not if you get the source BitTorrent "free"

If I 'were' to get copies of vBulletin (and Invision.. thanks!). Should there be a concern of callbacks or backtraces to the software companies as there are no licenses?
