2 Modems?
I have 2 computer that I want to hook up to cable internet. I have one cable line that runs through out the house. Could I get cable internet on two different computers using 2 modems instead of a router?

just use the router then you wouldnt have to pay for the extra modem...but yes you could use the 2 modems on the same network

Re: 2 Modems?
2 modems.. each woul dhave to be assigned their own IP from your ISP.. which in most cases.. your paying double.
Your better off with a router.. using one primary IP, and creating yourself a basic subnet. There is no reason you really need two cable modems unless your hosting a server on one of them, which most of the time, your ISP will say no to unless you pay high $$ for a high traffic account.

Re: 2 Modems?
second cable modem will cost you another IP address at the cable company... probably 20-40 bucks a month. Why not buy a $40 router and get it over with now?
Don't use a big word when a diminuitive one would suffice.

Re: 2 Modems?
I already have the extra modem. If it isn't going to work then I guess I will have to take it back and buy a router. Thanks...

Re: 2 Modems?
If you've already got the other one, you could try it, but I doubt it would work, unless they give you mutiple IPs. You can either use a crossover cable between the two pcs, usb between the two pc's, or get a router, and leave room for expansion.

Re: 2 Modems?
Besides if you add a second modem, it will drain the speed from the line. The reason is simple. Both modems are pulling for the same single, causing less bandwidth to be available. Meaning both PC's would run like ass on the internet. So just get a router like everyone suggested. They are real easy to set up!

Re: 2 Modems?
Buy a router. It's cheaper than another modem. You can buy wireless card (or use USB) for the PCs so you don't have to worry about running wires through the house. They are extremely easy to set up and configure. With my cable modem all you had to do was basically plug the wires in, there was no configuring on the router itself. With DSL I had to enter the account name and password.
Go to http://www.techbargains.com/ to look for a wireless router. You should be able to find a good deal there. They show a Belkin for $35 right now. I've seen deals for as cheap as $4 after rebates.
