Half-Life 2
I haven't bought it yet but I heard that you need to be connected to the internet the whole time while you're play. Is that true?

Re: Half-Life 2
I'm not a hundred percent sure on this one but I'll give it my best guess. I've got an always on connection, but I really haven't run into a problem. You load the game through Steam, which is their program where you can download games and updates through. Now you are supposed to be able to use Steam offline, just as online, however there was a time where it may have been a bug but when my internet was down I couldn't use it. However, I think that there was a problem, where an update was interrupted and it had to connect to the internet to properly work. I believe you have to get online once so Steam can validate your copy of Half Life 2, but it's supposed to work from then on out offline.
Good luck.

Re: Half-Life 2
Actually you dont need to be online ALL the time.
Half-Life uses Steam for authentication. As near as I can work out this means that the program files are encrypted, when you first run the game you connect to the Steam servers which verify your identity and decrypt the software so you can play it.
You will be re-authed against Steam for the first few times I believe. After that you can play HL without being connected.
From a technical point of view I like the concept and think it has some merit. As a customer I think it's an absolutely HORRIBLE idea for a number of reasons.
I can see Steam being useful for a number of applications, games are not one of them - it takes forever to decrypt the program, which is understandable if you bought the game and downloaded it, but from a CD install?!?!?
In addition, you still need to keep the freaking CD in the cd tray when playing it, whats the point? so basically I have a game that tracks itself for changes via Steam and still uses up one of my CD drives....that's just rude in my opinion.
It'll be the last game I buy that uses Steam simply because I feel it's too intrusive for a $50 game. If it were used to distribute media software - which usually runs in the range of $500 - $1000 I would support it totally over hardware dongles and other crap they try to foist on you for 'security'.
Wow, rant mode off.

I bought and downloaded HL2 over the internet, so there isn't a need for a CD which is pretty nice. About being connected to the internet, that doesn't bother me as much as in world of warcraft were you have to pay a fee every month to play the game. If someone buys a game they should be able to play it, and I'll never a buy a game with a monthly fee.
p.s. it's a very good game...

Your girlfriend.... won't let you? I'd say it's time to get a new girlfriend.... but if you're the type who will let a girlfriend tell you what games you cannot get, it's probably rather tough for you to find a new girlfriend!
Man, grow a set! :happycow:

Re: Half-Life 2
you just need to be online to unlock the game files after the install you don't need to be online when you are actually playing it then. You do need to be running steam in offline mode however.

Re: Half-Life 2
It's a BITCH to decrypt the game, but once that's done, It's alright. The Steam interface drives me CRAZY! It really does suck, but the game is awesome. My computer has already crashed once from the steam interface. :(
I paid 50 bucks for what seems like a nightmare when you first install it. It sucks.
