I've come to realize that it's not as accepted in general society as it was in my liberalish university that oppression like sexism, racism, homophobia, classism, etc. still exist. So my question is, how many of you believe these forms of oppression are still a problem?
By the way, here I'm using oppression to mean prejudice coming from someone in a power position. (prejudice + power = oppression) And the power positions in these cases are men, whites, straights, and the middle to upper classes.

Luckilly, I grew up amongst my own people here in the states (my schools were always 97+% mexican, and 2% other hispanic, and the rest was miscellaneous). I was smart, motivated, and had strict enough parents to keep my ass on check and move on up that ladder. So, my sister's a pharmacist, my older brother is a PE with a BA in Architecture from one of the best schools in the country. I'm an engineer with a good job and lots of potential and my little sister is off to become a huge success.

We didn't let people keep us down because of our race. We all proved their views and stereotypes wrong! Now, they are scared of us because we WILL take their jobs. And not in that stupid way people claim farm workers are taking their jobs, I mean I will put any other summbitch out of a job because I am simply fucking better at it

I bet it still exists in predominately white states though.

I am oppressed because I am not a minority, I am not gay, and I am not a woman. As hard as everyone thinks they have it because they are one of those things, I have it because I am not. BET? Lifetime? Bravo?

If a white man started White Man TV, he'd be ostracized. I hate putting on applications that I'm white, even for financial aid. I'm the last one looked at now, and I come from a family that was not ell provided for, so I deserve such funds as much as anyone else. I'm 25 and still in school right now, and this is one of the reasons.

I'm not trying to attain pity here. I think that everyone should be viewed at EXACTLY the same, regardless of gender, race, background, sexual orientation. I think the person who is most qualified for a job should get that job.

at the college I attended, whites were a minority... and not even the largest minority.. we're not talking a small school either... over 15000 students

Right, because every other TV station there is has been created by and for whites. BET, Lifetime, etc are compensating for a LACK of programing for blacks and women. When whites and men whine about "special" attention given to nonwhites and women, they're failing to acknowlege their own privilege. The fact remains that we live in a society so aimed at and provided for those in power positions, that we no longer even realize that's the way it is. The subtlety of the oppression is amazing, but moreso is its pervasiveness once you know how to look for it.

"Whining"? What fucking country do you live in? This country is aimed at pleasing minorities because of things that happend decades ago, which in turn has totally toppled the scale. There is no female equality anymore, no more minority equality. It's now about power. Female superiority. The failure to realize that there is an adverse effect to all of this balance shows this.

I think, instead of worrying about who is what race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or anything else, people should worry more about who the single person is as a person, rather than as a people.

One problem we're seeing now is how Christians and white men are oppressed, simply because we are the "majority". Well...guess what? The only age demographic where men have a larger population than women is under 20 (http://www.census.gov/population/po...2000/chap20.pdf). I say that Christians are oppressed because of the recent restrictions that schools have made (like banning the CONSTITUTION because it refers to God, there's a thread about that somewhere here). Also, it has become taboo to say to someone "merry Christmas" in a public school, but it is perfectly alright to say "happy Hanakah". WTF!? That's discrimination.

Also, why is it ok for a bunch of black guys to refer to me as a stupid craka...but if I call them a bunch of stupid n... that's not ok?

Why is it considered bad when I see a shady looking black man and I avoid him I'm looked down upon while if the races were reversed it would be ok?

Tell me that you don't honestly believe that whites and Christians aren't being descriminated against.

The only reaon this is an issue is because people want to keep it an issue. Look at juans story, he didnt need anything but drive and determination. Mix in some discipline from his parents and his whole family is succesful.

White, black, mexican, asian or fucking martian. It doesnt matter. There is no one out there called "the man" that wants to keep these people down below the poverty line. There isnt a group of congressmen and senators in a smoky back room in washinton dc asking themselves "what they can do this week to keep the minority down".

As a 27 year old white man Im sick of all this race bullshit. Educate yourself, pull your weight and contribute to the society and profession you are in and you will have nothing to worry about. You will never go hungry.

Know this. The momment you stop depending on the government for help or an edge the faster you will become succesfull and most of all happy.
