Where did our country go wrong?
I've always thought about this from time to time, the recent thread about the 8 year old girl getting suspended for bring jello to school kinda brought it back up to my mind. Just what exactly has caused our country to spiral down hill like this over the past 50 years? It seems to me from all the history that i've read up on, that the United States wasn't really that bad of a place until around the Vietnam time span. It just seems from then on everything has went to hell in a hand basket. Increased crime rates, obescity, children on drugs and shooting each other in schools, it just seems that the majority of the U.S. is loosing morals and they really don't care about there fellow neighbor anymore. Im seriously starting to think about moving to a very rural area somewhere with a low population after my son is a couple years old, just because im sick and tired of people's greed.
It just makes me sick when im in town and i try to turn out of a side road onto traffic. People won't even look at you to acknowledge your presence, i've had to wait in bumper to bumper traffic for 5-10 minutes for someone that's kind enough to take 5 seconds to let someone out into traffic. What pisses me off more than that is to be one of the nice people that let others out in traffic, only to have it be one of the jackass's i despise and they don't even wave to say thanks. I think it's pretty bad when your own grandmother tells you that she feels sorry for her own great-grandson having to grow up in today's world.
So what event's do you think led our great nation to turn into what it has become today?

Took away copral punishment... Kids get away with so much bullshit these days... Teachers and parents hands are tied.. Its a sad day when if a teacher so much as raises a voice they can be fired, but a kid can call a teacher a "Fucking Cunt" and not even be reprimanded.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
Honestly? I think it's allowing women in the workplace. Well, I suppose the larger problem is more and more people working. Kids in the last 50 years or so were brought up more and more on TV and video games. Sure, it's the parent's responsibility to teach children morals and what is right. But as more and more go into the workplace, less and less people are there to teach their kids how to be polite. But I suppose if both parents didn't work, you wouldn't be able to keep up with the Joneses. A pitfall of capitalism, I suppose.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
I'll agree with you Jimi, i think its got alot to do with how liberal the country has become and how the judicial system has become pretty much a joke. I really wish that we could turn back the clock and have the country the was it was in the 50's and EARLY 60's and for criminals to actually pay for there crimes instead of getting smacked on the wrist and released early due to prison over-crowding. I think we should bring back the death penalty in all states and actually USE it. And im not talking about lethal injection, fk that, bring back the chair....or even have public hanging's. Im sure if everyone knew that if you killed someone your ass is going to have a painfull death and there's no way around it....there would be ALOT less homicides.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
I don't know about the death penalty. I was watching something about an hour ago about people who were on death row and were found innocent like 10 years later. There are things worse than death, people just worry too damn much about criminal rights, when criminals should be stripped of their rights, since they make it habit to strip others of their rights.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
Alot of people on death row are being found innocent now due to the recent increase in the technology of DNA testing. I haven't heard of anyone being found innocent that's been convicted after DNA testing has become so reliable, but im still for the death penalty. I know if someone killed someone that i love i wouldn't want them to get 25 to life....just to come up for early parole. Im a firm believer of eye for an eye, even though alot of people say that an eye for an eye just makes alot of blind people. I also blame the increase of drug abuse since the late 60's early 70's and the loss of family values and morals.
My mother was killed in a car accident by a drunk truck driver that was also under the influence of speed....he was convicted of homicide by vehicle but was released after serving 2 years.

Ehh, I'd rather have the guy who killed my mom strapped down and tortured for the rest of his life.

So would i, but after he was released early on parole because of the prison over-crowding he escaped the country and fled back to Cuba. I just hope that i get paroled after just 2 years if i ever find him.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
Dumb mothers getting involved in politics they couldn't comprehend...so many things...the corporal punishment that RTG brought up..."criminal rights"...senseless gun control (bet'cha saw that coming) have all been cause by nervous ninnies that think about themselves and their precious little angel (even though that precious little angel has a foul mouth, been with every guy/girl in town, etc). They need to realize that what might save one person (they always say..."if it saves just one life"), will damn many more. It's that that has pulled down our society.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
And, while they're expelling little girls with scissors, they're locking murderers up for only 8 years, then letting them go. My cousin's in prison for 25+ for carjacking, and he's with people who are in there for 8 for murder. This country's priorities are all fucked up.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
i think the biggest problem with society is that people don't realize that a lot of good goes on, people say that they only report bad news, but they couldn't go around reporting all the good news (but they should try), old people like to say things were better back in the day, but how, rampant racism and hate were back then, but you only remember the good, guaranteed in 50 years we will all be on webrats saying how good it was in 2004

Re: Where did our country go wrong?
Wow, so much anger at the liberals who brought us such horrible things like equal rights for women and minorities (Bergs, do you really think my quitting my job would solve anything? You're forgetting that more Dads aren't there to teach their kids anything either). But that's not what the question was about. I think the question made assumptions that were flawed. When people talk about the 1950s they tend to glorify the time when it's wasn't really that way at all. Not everyone was the Cleaver family, and the Cleavers weren't even real. For example, I can assume from your posts that most of you are probably pro-life, but did you know that the abortion rate was highest in the 1950s? Could that be because the stigma of sex before marriage was ridiculous? So we don't have the stigma anymore, we have more sex education (although still not enough) and now the abortion rate is lower - wow, really immoral society. And is it really more moral to dictate women's lives by keeping them stuck in the home when they'd rather be doing anything else? Is it more moral to keep gay men and lesbians in the closet because there is no safety for them anywhere? Talk to older gay men and ask them how fun their lives were in the 50s. Do the same with women and minorities.
The specific things mentioned in the original question I think can mostly be attributed to capitalism and increased individualism. (Yes, I do think McDonald's has a lot of blame in the problem with obesity) And "criminal rights" - what would you prefer? Guantanamo? Criminal rights are what will keep your dumbass out of prision when you're illegally searched by the cops. Welcome to America.
Our world isn't any worse than it was, it's just different. That's how it works. Lots of things change over time, and if you really look closely you'll find that they never really get better or worse, they just become different.
