When people talk about the 1950s they tend to glorify the time when it's wasn't really that way at all. Not everyone was the Cleaver family, and the Cleavers weren't even real. For example, I can assume from your posts that most of you are probably pro-life, but did you know that the abortion rate was highest in the 1950s? Could that be because the stigma of sex before marriage was ridiculous? So we don't have the stigma anymore, we have more sex education (although still not enough) and now the abortion rate is lower - wow, really immoral society. And is it really more moral to dictate women's lives by keeping them stuck in the home when they'd rather be doing anything else? Is it more moral to keep gay men and lesbians in the closet because there is no safety for them anywhere? Talk to older gay men and ask them how fun their lives were in the 50s. Do the same with women and minorities.
The specific things mentioned in the original question I think can mostly be attributed to capitalism and increased individualism. (Yes, I do think McDonald's has a lot of blame in the problem with obesity) And "criminal rights" - what would you prefer? Guantanamo? Criminal rights are what will keep your dumbass out of prision when you're illegally searched by the cops. Welcome to America.
Our world isn't any worse than it was, it's just different. That's how it works. Lots of things change over time, and if you really look closely you'll find that they never really get better or worse, they just become different.

Very educated post.. shit.. I actually enjoyed reading that.. a true opinion.. I think Jimi has some more competition..

Re: Where did our country go wrong?

Its the ultra PC, extreme left and special interest groups that are damaging our country, along with the silent majority staying silent. The people that wont express their opinions because they are afraid they will offend one person in the group.

These people dont want a mention of Jesus in schools but they will spend a day on ramadan or quanza, whatever the hell that is.

I see it on alot of boards as well. You mention you're a christian and want to discuss christianity these people call you sheep or idiots. But if somone bashes islam you get called a bigot and a racist by these same people and get banned.

They preach tolerance but only if you agree with them. If not you are stupid and intolerant.

You have the ACLU defending a member of nambla that killed a 10 year old boy in court.

http://www.operationlookout.org/loo...fend_nambla.htm

Meanwhile that same group is going after the boy scouts for not letting certain people join their PRIVATE organization.

You have a major retailer banning the santas that ring the bell at the salvation army pot during christmas because they are afraid they will be forced to let any group who wants to do it by the courts that bow to the will of these people.

It's fucked up when a private group or business goes under attack by some special interest group that most people wouldnt agree with in the first place just because a very small group of people got their feelings hurt.

The fact that you don't know what Kwanzaa is, but you're using it as an example shows that your argument is a bit off.

This is one thing that I am quite conservative on. I think that the system IS too leniant on criminals, and too harsh on others. Our priorities, as stated, are WAY out of whack.

I was illegally searched one week ago today by narcotics officers because they suspected that I was smuggling drugs from Houston to Corpus Christi. Although I felt violated, and the search was unsubstantiated, I let them proceed because I knew I had nothing on me, therefore I would survive.

Civil Rights are absolutely obviously a good thing. This country is where it is due to such movements as Civil Rights in the 50's, no doubt. Civil Rights, though, exist to keep this country comfortable socially, but when that comfort is infringed upon by someone, why is it that we must allow ourselves to keep making that person more comfortable than other civilians? Personally, while watching COPS, the best part is seeing the person who just caused some old lady's accident get jacked up when the cops pull him out of his car and give him a little street justice.

There is a difference between defending WHAT someone is saying and defending their RIGHT to say it. Many people seem to think that it is hypocritical of the ACLU and similar organizations to, for example, sue a corporation for discrimination while at the same time defending the KKK's right to hold a rally. But the Klan is entitled to the same rights as you and I. Just because an opinion is unpopular doesn't mean that the Bill of Rights or the Constitiution doesn't apply to it.

In the same respect, though, the KKK is infringing on the rights of others to live happy lives.... so where is that line drawn? I guess that's for another thread, though.

sure they are but not to the extent of the groups I've posted. I havent heard anything in the news about the kkk in a few years.

Im sure I would have because we all know how the newspapers would jump all over that story, somehow trying to tie it to christianity therfore continuing their efforts to bash all christians.

Re: Where did our country go wrong?

Ohh and there is another post trying to switch focus over to christians and just trying to blame something on us. It's like little children when they tell the parents what the other did. All you get is

"but he did _________!! yeah but she did ________!" and on and on.

I post something, not even negative towards another religion and someone already jumps in saying

"but...but...but... the christians did this and the christians say that ........"

How does that justify the aclu defending a child molester that killed a 10 year old boy?

EDIT: and this is why the country is like it is today. Everything has to be anylized down with a microscope. Every arguement has a counter. There still is right and wrong in this country but people are so scared to tell someone they are wrong and deserve what they get.

Most people dont know what that "holiday" is or means. All I know is teachers and students have been forced to focus on that for a day in schools across the country. But the second someone spends a day on jesus you get these athiest parents crying foul.

They are tollerant to every religion except christianity. Its like they are anti-christian rather than just plain old athiests.

If they focused on it for even a day, they would know what it means.

Are you specifying an argument of mine in particular? I think that religion and religious philosophy should be taught in school, but any exclusions should be prohibited.
