Pretty cool:

My wife and I were out at South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa checking out furniture for our new house and stopped at Wahoo's Fish Tacos for dinner. Two high school looking jocks that I saw earlier going into Borders sit down just behind us. The one looks really familiar. Then some girl from the USC store downstairs comes up with three footballs. She walks away and I turn around and whisper to my wife, "that's Matt Leinart, Heisman trophy winner for SC".
My family and friends are HUGE USC fans. 8 season tickets, tailgate parties, front row in parking lot for tailgate party at Rose Bowl last year, etc..
My wife is telling me to get his autograph for my dad. I HATE doing that shit. So I went downstairs to see if I could snag one of the footballs he signed from the USC store downstairs. The girl at the store was embarassed. She said they were for her family and he seemed kind of annoyed when she asked him to autograph the balls.
Dude was seriously just chilling with a couple of homies, and I figured I didn't want to be another dickhead asking for an autograph.
He seemed way cool, chill and down to earth. Freaking tall and skinny (I knew this, but you never fathom it until you're face to face).
Called my dad afterwards and he was just stoked that he was the first person I called to tell of the encounter.
I wanted to tell him congrats, and
the Sooners on January 4th!!!

Re: Matt Leinart

Thats cool! I had a similar situation a couple months ago in Seattle. My buddy and I hit Edgar's last game as a Mariner. Afterwards we went and orders some drinks from the bar in our hotel lounge. We are sitting down bullshitting about the game when Shigitosi Hasegawa walks in. (One of Seattle Reliever/Closers). He is with about eight family members and friends, and they sit down at the table next to us.

I really didn't want to bug the guy. He just got done with a game and he was there for dinner and drinks.

Then I started thinking. I only have one shot, I might as well take it. So I got a pen and paper from our waitress and when to his table and ask him if it was to much to ask if I got his autograph.

Turns out he's the coolest cat!! Not only did he sign it for me, he talked to me and my buddy for quite awhile.

Its something he won't remember, but I will.

I've met a few athletes, but the coolest would have to be Todd Jones (Relief Pitcher) when he played for the Tigers. We had standing room tickets at an Orioles game, and Mussina was pitching a Perfect Game, and he asked me if Mussina was still perfect, we talked for about 4 innings. He threw me up a couple BP homerun balls.

Re: Matt Leinart

I had chances to talk to Brooks Robinson, Mike Scoscia, and Tim Salmon of baseball fame. All were cool. I have autographs from all three. Other sports I have met Jerry Tarkanian, John Cappeletti (Heisman Trophy), Ken Norton Sr. and Jr. Probably more if I think about it....

I went to USC briefly, didn't like it. I saw them play live so many times, Rose Bowls on Jan 1, 1973, 1977, 1979, and 1980.

Right now, USC 35 Oklahoma 10. Saw both play each other live in 1981, SC was #1, OK #2. USC won in the last minute and both teams dive bombed out of the top 20 soon after.

I could care less about football these days. Hope every fan finds a reason to cheer some day. USC is the best team in the nation now it seems, but someone will beat them soon enough.

Re: Matt Leinart

Respect Mfinely, but USC is NUMBER FUCKING ONE as a football team and as a school!

USC breeds class and integrity. Two qualities VERY lacking in 99% of our schools and throughout our society (see UCLA and the Democratic Party). Of course there are always exceptions to the rule (see OJ Simpson). But every person I know that has come out of USC is the best of the best in their chosen occupations. I'm actually considering my second masters through their MBA.PM school.

All's I gotta say is Oklahoma got their asses delivered to them BIG TIME! Jason White looked like 100% shit. I wasn't sure who was the better QB for USC; Leinhart with 5 TD passes or White throwing 3 interceptions! And #1 Bradley should be thanked for his great judgement at trying to pick up a bouncer from a punt inside the 10 yard line surrounded by cardinal jersies that put USC on the board and began the Trojan charge!

That stadium was near empty in the third quarter!

Leave No Doubt! USC is the greatest! Pete Carroll has been there since 2000, and is 36-3 in the last three seasons, delivered 2 Heisman trophy winners (Palmer and Leinhart) and back to back National Championships (Rose [which I was at last year] and Orange) with the BCS fucking up their last year with LSU. All of this and, something like, all but 6 returning players next year! Even if Leinhart decides to go to the NFL, they have a strong team with LenDale White and Reggie Bush kicking major ass!

Remember, everybody said that USC was finished after Carson Palmer left!

My bet is that I will be enjoying my 8 season tickets with my friends and family next season watching Matt, Reggie and LenDale tear up the BCS once again.

As long as Pete Carroll is coaching USC, they will be the best of the best!

Leave No Doubt!

Re: Matt Leinart

My dad is alumni as USC, that's how I got in. they treated me more like all they were interested in was my fee bill, which, I paid out of my own pocket. Nothing against them, I just found state college life more to my tastes.

Oh, i also met OJ 21 years ago......

Re: Matt Leinart

I can understand the money deal.
I did community college for my first couple of years. Those first couple years are like extended high school anyway. Might as well pay city college a few bucks as opposed to the butt reaming fees of universities. Especially privates like USC. Their MBA.PM, which is full MBA 2 nights a week for two years, is $75,000!

Cool about the OJ meeting. Back when he was a respected athlete  and not a despised murderer
