Re: Remembering Pearl Harbor
Here's a timeline of the events:
Dec. 7, 1941, timeline
3:45 a.m. (local time) -- The minesweeper USS Condor spots a submarine periscope outside Pearl Harbor.
6:10 a.m. -- The first planes flew off the six Japanese carriers north of Hawaii.
6:45 a.m. -- The USS Ward attacks a submarine outside the harbor. Word of this attack is delayed reaching headquarters due to decoding problems.
7:02 a.m. -- A radar operator on Oahu reports aircraft approaching Hawaii. Headquarters discounts the report, believing the planes are a group of bombers expected from the West Coast.
7:33 a.m. -- Warning of a possible attack sent to military officials arrives at a Honolulu civilian telegraph office. The telegram is finally delivered as the attack begins.
7:49 a.m. -- Japanese Cmdr. Mitsuo Fushida orders attack to begin.
7:55 a.m. -- Planes attack Pearl Harbor as well as other Navy and Army facilities in Hawaii.
8:10 a.m. -- The USS Arizona explodes on Battleship Row.
8:39 a.m. -- A Japanese miniature sub is sunk in the harbor.
8:54 a.m. -- The second wave of Japanese planes begins to attack.
10 a.m. -- The last Japanese planes return to their carriers, leaving Pearl Harbor in flames.
