What are everyone's thoughts on retarded people having children, either conceiving or adopting and the raising of the children?

This is one of those questions that people will have diverse views on (maybe).

If the child is in risk then they shouldn't have the right to raise them. If it's mild retardation that may not be that big an issue, but severe cases would be a no-no in my book.

I see retarded people having kids all the time...

But if you mean diagnosed with Down Syndrome, then as CD said, it depends on the level of retardation.

Agreed. If they have a serious disorder where that can't care for themselves or there control issues are in jeopardy, then no.. they should not be able to have kids. I also feel like you should be atleast the age of 25 before you can have a kid. Anyone younger who gets pregnant by mistake should be forced to carry the child until born where its placed up for adoption or in a foster home.

reminds me of the movie i am sam. i was crying for half of the movie. you can see sam's devotion to his kid, but you can also see his inability to raise her. at the moment i dunno where i stand on this issue, i have to think about it a bit more...

Re: Another good conversation starter

well, how can one possibly know that the children of two people who have down syndrome actaully be retards? Hear me out, the probability is very, high of course. But this is how evolution comes about, perhaps the combination of genes will be so fucked up, yet somehow turn out to be so right that a better person is created. The chances are small but there is always that chance....I always like to make a point for the other side if there isn't one b/c there is always at least two sides to everything.

Re: Another good conversation starter

I suppose the problem is that mentally retarded kids/adults are horny and don't know better... increases chances of a really desparate horny encounter.

i think the issue is no-one should have kids, kids should banned.
instead ppl should be allowed to have plants only.

What the fuck???

Well, i have the added bonus of being surrounded by mentally handicapped people and many of them hold jobs and are able to care for themselves. They are really friendly (most of them) and i believe they all are roommated up so they aren't all alone. For some reason there are a lot of slow people (cause im not 100% sure their problem IS Down Syndrome) in my co-op complex and they all seem fine and two of them together could handle a child...Plus they have a great network going on and i always see some of them being picked up by a van (not sure what the service is or where they're going) so they have outside help....

I don't see why they couldn't have kids...And they aren't all horned up and fucking whatever they see...They actually seem like they'd be the opposite, a lot more patient and respectful than a lot of "normal" guys i've encountered.

I had a mentally handicapped girl in my middle school or high school gym class. She apparently thought it would be a good idea to play with herself in class. Think about it in this way... do you get horny every now and then? If so what do you do about it? But what if that ability to wait or hold off wasn't there?

Re: Another good conversation starter

You can't base it on an encounter with ONE human being. I had this kid Timmy Ellison in one of my classes...He'd always be touching himself; one day the teacher even had to tell him to stop. He wasn't mentally challenged, but there he was touching himself.
